| Wisconsin Dells & House on the Rock July 23-27, 2007 5 Days |
||||||||||||||||
| DAY 1: CHAMPAGNE, IL: Join us on this 5-day tour to Wisconsin Dells and House on the Rock plus treasures along the way. Today we travel through Tennessee, Kentucky, and into Illinois. We stay overnight in Champagne, IL. DAY 2: AMANA COLONIES / LUNCH @ OX YOKE INN / DUBUQUE, IL: The Amana Colonies are a group of settlements of German Pietists comprising seven villages. Calling themselves the Community of True Inspiration, they migrated from Germany to New York in 1842, where a communal system was then established. Due to the rapid growth around their settlement, and the fear of materialism, the colony moved to the unsettled west to the state of Iowa. In 1932 members voted to dissolve the communal system and return to the traditional church and to become a joint-stock company, the Amana Society. The most widely known buisness that emerged from the Amana Society is Amana Refrigeration. A guide will take us on a four-hour tour with many stops along the way. We conclude with a bountiful meal of German-American fare served family-style in "old world" charm of the Ox Yoke Inn. (L) DAY 3: HOUSE ON THE ROCK / BROWSING IN WISCONSIN DELLS / UPPER DELLS BOAT TOUR / WISCONSIN DELLS, WI: The construction of the House on the Rock was begun in the 1940's by Alex Jordan Sr, a rejected student of Frank Lloyd Wright, apparently to spite Wright. When Jordan showed Wright the plans for a building, which Jordan had designed and hoped for Wright's approval, Wright looked at the plans and told Jordan, " I wouldn't hire you to design a cheese crate or a chicken coop. You're not capable." Today the House is a complex of architecturally unique rooms, streets, gardens and shops built mostly by Alex Jordan Jr. Jordan sold the house in 1988 to a friend who continued building onto the site, adding to the collections of knick-knacks and exhibits featuring authentic pieces, reproductions, and especially-made examples of everything. The word is, "you would have to see it to believe it!" By mid-afternoon we will be checking into our hotel in Wisconsin Dells. Later you will have free time to explore the shoppes and select a dining spot for dinner (on your own). Wisconsin Dells is a five-mile gorge formed during the last Ice Age--about 15,000 years ago--on the Wisconsin River. On our boat tour we'll step into the past and experience the "Dallea" (flat layered rock). Its unspoiled river scenes, imaginative rock formations, high sandstone cliffs and gorges permeated with fern and flora seen only by boat, are close to how the first explorers would have found it. Our overnight is in Wisconsin Dells. DAY 4: SPRINGFIELD, IL / LINCOLN PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY AND MUSEUM / ST. LOUIS, MO: A visit of the new Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield will be the highlight of the day. Prepare to be entertained, educated and mesmerized by this one-of-a-kind, world class facility that uses 21st century technology to transport you back to the 19th century world of Abraham Lincoln. We overnight in St. Louis. DAY 5: LUNCH @ PATTI'S IRON KETTLE / HOME: Before going home, we'll have a wonderful country feast while we remember the exciting five days this has been! (DCB.L) |
