Iowa Youth Symposium and Midwest Regional Conference

The Senior MUN organization participates in in two events each year.  One in the Fall and one in the Spring.  Although there are many conferences out there, we have to limit ourselves to theses conferences due to budgetary concerns.

IYS

The Iowa Youth Symposium for many schools, including Senior is a two step process.  Many schools meet in there regions.  Our regions consists of seven schools.  At the IYS, students are placed in groups and discuss and issue they choose to discuss.  Student discussion are meant to develop an position paper for their region.  All students discuss the issue from the point of view of the United States.  In other words, the issue is stated in the following manner.  What should be the position of the United States on the issue of...?  In the groups, for the Dubuque Region groups are about 20 to 30 students, students pick two delegates to act as representatives for the region in Des Moines.

In Des Moines, there are two days of discussion.  On the first day, regional delegates discuss and debate the issues from there region's perspective.  After the first day, Outstanding Delegates are chosen by the Secretariat of UNI's MUN organization.  On the second day, any delegates can join the resolution building process.  There are hundreds of students who participate in the discussions on these two days.

Although the UNI MUN Secretariat helps to oversee this event, they are not in charge of the administration.  However, if you are interested in becoming involved in this spectacular event, I am sure they could tell you who you need to contact.

Midwest Regional Conference

The spring event for Senior MUN is the Midwest Regional MUN Conference in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  This event includes of 500 students from over 50 schools annually.  This event allows students to represent the views of a country they represent in a number of different settings.  The General Assembly is very large while the Legal Sub committees tend to be much smaller.  This conference had included delegations from many states such as Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Missouri, and Ohio.  This event starts on Thursday night and concludes the following Saturday afternoon.  For delegates who take MUN seriously, this conference can be an excellent way to work on and show off skills related to the MUN experience.  To get involved with this conference contact the University of Northern Iowa Model United Nations Organization.  http://www.uni.edu/ihsmun/whataboutmun.htm
