| Synopsis: Voyager enters space controled by the hostile Krenim. After repeated attacks and tampering with the timeline, the crew faces Voyager's ultimate destruction. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Over All: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The fact that anyone can predict the ending of the second part | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| halfway through the first part is quite irrelevent to me. This Story is about how Voyager faces its destruction, Janeway's attachment to her ship and her crew, and Annorex's struggle to restore time. Year of Hell is an epic tale of enormous porportions. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Pros: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| - Kurtwood Smith was truely exceptional in his role as Annorex | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| His amazing potrale of the the time crazed Krenim Captain gave amazing depth to this story. - The best thing about this epic tale was definetly the potrait of the crew and how they handled the gradually destruction of Voyager, how working together in grave circumstances brings the crew closer together. Some examples, the scene where Kim and Torres are trapped in a room together waiting for rescue and how Seven of Nine cares for Tuvok after he goes blind. - It also does an awesome job of exploring the relationship between Janeway and Chakotay. In the past they hinted at romance but it was always avoided because having the captain and first officer romanticly involved would be innaporpaite and a bit riduceloos, however this explores how deep their relationship does go, how Chakotay tries to convience Janeway to abandon ship, and when he makes her a present that Janeway rejects and orders him to recycle for resources. One of the most touching scenes in Trek is after Chakotay had been abducted by Annorex months earlier she finds her present in his qaurters in tact, and decides to keep it. - The devolpment of the Krenim Captain was done quite excellently. When we first see him in the time peroid the Krenim are weak, he's annyoning and explosive. After the time change when the Krenim are much more powerful he's confident and overbearing. When the Timeline is restored, he's gallaint and friendly. - Contrary to some other opinions I've heard, I believe this episode holds true with the outline set in the thrid season episode "Before and After" where Kes travels through time, from the end of her life to the begining. In that episode they mention the Krenim and the year of Hell, but events shown there were quite differnt then seen here. For one thing Kes was there, not Seven of Nine, for another Janeway and Torres were killed, the Doctor was offline and the crew did not abandon ship, and at the end of that spisode Kes told Janeway about the Krenim and Janeway said she'd keep a look out for them. Yet in this episode Janeway shows absolutely no reconition when she encounters the Krenim. However all of these events are not at all contraditory to this episode. This episode clearly establishes that Annorex has been using his time ship to alter time for the past 200 years. it's reasonable to assume that since the time line involing the Krenim was being constantly altered, the time line was altered so that the events of "Before and After" never took place. Kes was never there to recieve radition posioning from the Krenim torpedoe, so she never traveled back through time. Which is fine by me, I wish I could erase that episode from history myself. - This episode was consistant with "Before and After" in all the important way, The Krenim use torpedoes that are in a state of temporal flux in order to penetrait Voyager's shields, Neelix becomes a security officer, and the scene where Kess is in the jeffery tube trying to figure out the temporal varience of the torpedoe still takes place, but its Seven of Nine instead of |
