Star Trek Episode Countdown
Synopsis: Seven hundred years in the future, the Doctor's back up program is found on a planet that potrays Voyager as aggresor in their history. The Doctor struggles to set the record straight.
Over All:
A remarkable episode, with stunning parallels to present day
life and how we view history.
Pros:
- This is the only episode of any Trek series to take place in the
ditant future from the rest of the series. and in actualality none of the main characters are in this episode. We see the Doctor's back up program and holograms of all the other main characters.
- This episode is an amazing and bold comentary on how easily history can be distorited. Most of the history taught in schools today could be just as badly garbled and misunderstood as the Kyrians potrale of Voyager.
- One saying seems up this episode, "those who don't learn from history are dur to repeat it." This episode show in action what that saying means. When the Doctor's back up program is discovered and he revealed the true events that took place, it triggers race roits and the possiblity of war, hundreds of years after the intail conflict, because they misunderstood history they could not move on.
- The develpoment of the historain Quarren was done quite excellently, how when he first heard the Doctor's version of events he didn't believe him. He couldn't concieve that what he thought to be true all of his life was wrong. But his desire to learn the truth oversame his denial, and he was willing to consider things he would have never accepted in the past.
Cons:
- I understand how the Kyrians could get some facts about Voyager
right and others totally wrong, but I find it unlikely they could get exact details right, like the crew's names and what they look like and be totally off about everything else.
- The whole idea of having a back up program to the Doctor seems wrong to me. All past refernces to the Doctor indicate that the Doctor's program is unique and can not be backed up. In "Message in a Bottle" when the Doctor goes to the Alpha Qaudrant, and the crew is uncertain on whether or not he will return, Paris convinces Kim to try to create another EMH so that he won't have to replace the Doctor. Eventurly Kim fails, and states that the Doctor's program is too sophitacated to re-create. If this back up program exsisted, why didn't Paris just use that.
