Synopsis: While searching for a missing ship, the Enterprise encounters a duo of scienctists that claim that warp drive is damaging space, and is effecteing their home planet
Over All:
An interesting and entertaining episode, that's a little boring at
parts.
Pros:
- The plot with the Enterprise search for the missing medical
ship is quite entertaining. At first, they encounter the Ferengi that attack them and accuse them of mining the coeeidor, then they get disabled themselves and get boarded by the scientist that mined the corridor, and it get really interesting from there.
- This episode has odvisous messages about pollution, and feelings about it today. The whole thing with warp drive damging space is a paralle to how cars damage the atmostphere. If warp drive is used to much it will adventarly cause destructive rifts in space the effect the near by planets, being very hazardous to life. However without warp drive star systems would be completed cut off from the rest of the galaxy, just like how fossil fuels damage the atmosphere, and if we keep using them could make Earth uninhabitable. However without the use of gasoline driven vehicles citys would be cut off from the rest of the world.
- This episode shows all side of the pollution debate. LaForge, the warp engine expect of course is very defensive about the whole idea that warp drive could be harmfl represent the people who don't care the gasoline is serouisly damaging our planet, however since LaForge is one of the good guys, in the end he accepts the fact the warp drive is harmful. Serova reprents those who are willing to go to extreme measures to get people to listen to them and to stop polluting.
Cons:
- The whole plot with Geordi trying to convince Data to train Spot
was boring, and quite pointless. It seems to me, that they couldn't fill up the whole 45 minutes, with the warp drive plot, so they invinted the stupid side plot about Data's cat that had nothing to do with anything else.
- I like the messages about pollution, but having warp drive be harmful to space is a big mistake. It's conterproductive to the whole Star Trek saga.
- And the warp drive speed limit that the Federation decides to put up, is also ridiculous. In several seventh season episode, they mention the warp drive speed limit, but after that it is tottally forgotten. The TNG movies, DS9, and VOY act like this episode never happend.
