Synopsis: The crew explores a colony of humans that are dying of old age, when not one of them is older than 30. After returning to ship they discover that the landing party is also aging at a tremendous rate.
Over All:
It was interesting to see the crew growing old from a weird
space phenenom and how the Enterprise escapes from the clutches of the Romulans, but the plot on whether or not Kirk was fit to command was quite boring.
Pros:
- An orginal and classic idea, of showing the certain members of
the crew grow old at a fast rate.
- I like any episode that explores the character of any one besides Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. Here we learn more about Checkov, namely his sense of humor. How he is the only one who was on the planet who is not aging at a fast rate.
- The scene where, after Kirk recovers from the diease, takes command of the bridge and bluffs the Romulans into leaving them alone, is classic.
Cons:
- Commedor Stocker wants to have Kirk removed from command
because due to his extreme age, he is no longer capable of commanding the Enterprise. Both Spock and Scotty are also effected by the diease, so Commedor Stocker himself has to take command of the Enterprise, when he has no experience commanding a starship. Stocker even says, "What would you have me do, turn this ship over to junior officer?" Well, what about Sulu. We seen from past episodes including "Arena" that Sulu is more than capable of taking command of the ship. And he would do a better job than Stocker, has he warned Stocker against crossing into the Neutral Zone which almost got them destroyed.
- It also shows why they shouldn't have the top three commanding officers beam down to a planet, what if they all died, then who would command the ship.
- The whole heiring about Captain Kirk's ability to command was boring and a bit stupid.
