Assessment and Manipulatives in the Music Classroom:This workshop will focus on formative and summative assessment in the Kodaly classroom. Attendees will learn many different strategies to assess and improve each child's musicianship, through songs, games, activities, and the use of various manipulatives.
...Aileen Brown holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Central Michigan University, and a Masters of Music Education with an emphasis in Kodaly from Capital University. While a student at Capital, she was awarded the Susie Stillinger Scholarship for Teaching Excellence as well as the Jeno Adam Scholarship from OAKE; she finished her studies in Kecskemet, Hungary, at the Kodaly Institute. She has held the positions of Publicity for SEMKE and Secretary for TRIKE, and is currently President-Elect of TRIKE, Executive Treasurer for MKMEA, and Midwest Regional Representative and Membership Co-Chair for OAKE. Aileen has published articles in the TRIKE Notes and MKMEA Bulletin, has shared activities for SEMKE, and presented for TRIKE. She is currently in her eleventh year of teaching, and teaches General Music and Strings for the Olentangy Local School District near Columbus, Ohio.

First Grade Curriculum: It's as easy as Sol Mi Sol Mi
Join fellow music colleagues as we explore the skills and concepts taught during the first grade year of music instruction in a Kodaly classroom. Participants will explore strategies and techniques that will make their singing, playing, and dancing activities a success for every student. Special attention will be given to the concepts of sol/mi/la and ta/titi/rest, as well as program ideas and using popular childrens books in the classroom. You won't want to miss this fun filled workshop! Hope to see you there!
.....Karla Cherwinski has taught general music for the past 16 years to kids at a variety of age levels, from birth -6th grade. The past 11 years have been spent at Indian Trail Elementary in Canal Winchester, OH teaching Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders. Karla is the immediate Past President of the Mid West Kodly Educators of America (MKMEA) and has served on the Organization of American Kodaly Educators (OAKE) board of directors as Member at Large and Regional Representative. She has also served as the Tri-City Kodaly Educators (TRIKE) president and is currently its secretary. During the summer, Karla teaches Level III Kodaly Methodology and Materials through the masters program at Colorado State University. She has her Kodaly Certificate from the Kodaly Institute at Capital University and has studied at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemet, Hungary. She received a Bachelor of Music degree from Capital University, and a Masters Degree in Music Education from The Ohio State University.
