"Mitigation"
"Mitigation refers to activities which actually eliminate or reduce the chance of occurrence or the effects of a disaster."
Mitigation, although listed first, is an ongoing process that takes place prior to, during, and following an occurance. It is an important aspect of prevention and preparation. Some examples of mitigation are: Replacing culverts that flood or wash out seasonally with larger culverts. Relocating a home, building, business, or mobile home park out of a flood zone to prevent future damage. Developing zoning ordinances and building codes to save lives and prevent or minimize damage to property.
