Steve Santos, or Stevesantos in the art community, was born on Dec 22, 1951. Being the son of noted artist Mauro Malang Santos, he was exposed to art at a very tender age, meeting other equally famous artist-friends of his father: Vicente Manansala, Hugo Yonzon, and Larry Alcala, the latter being also his godfather. When he entered the UP College of Fine Arts, Santos had already reached a high level of proficiency in painting and drawing. Impressed by his work in tempera, his teacher Roberto Chabet arranged for his first one-man show at the Luz Gallery in 1974, In 1973, he held a three-man show with Agustin Goy and Manuel Baldemor set the trend in Magic Realism. At this time, Santos also showed traces of social realism, although most of his paintings were landscapes, It was during this period that the influence of Andrew Wyeth on his art was strongest. From landscapes of a panoramic sweep, Steve Santos extended magic realism to ordinary domestic objects, such as flops and plugs. In 1976, the artist shifted front rural Images to the urban in his City Series consisting of cityscapes, generally in monochrome, which focused on street signs, such as billboards and neon signs, as well as architectural features in crowded urban districts.
