Elaine Haverty rubbed her head. She was sick of all these dealings and she had been proved right about her reservations for the success of the mission. Elaines oldest son had become embroiled in a plan to find and follow a girl for a friend and her family. She should have gone with her gut instinct and declined, but they were very persuasive. Elaine now had try and explain to her son the great misconduct he had committed. They were trying to blame Alex, but all he had done was follow what his heart was feeling - hurt. Now he had phoned and his father had gone off in search of Elaine to talk to her son. She sat down in the easy chair and prepared to comfort her only son.
Hey Mum, you know how I was looking for that girl. Alex hadnt really known how to talk to his mum about this issue. What was it that she had to tell him, he wondered.
Hi sweetie. Yes I know sweetie, and you confronted her didnt you? Elaine sighed, she knew somewhere deep down this had been a bad idea, why hadnt they just asked the aunt to contact the girl.
Mum, I really liked her and she lied to me. I know I wasnt supposed to but I knew her and really liked her. I had to confront her about it because we had this thing where we actually talked to each other and confided in each other. I thought that it was fair enough that she didnt tell me at the outset but when I confronted her she just flatly denied everything. Alex was really hurting and was past being angry anymore. He was just sad.
Alex, Kaylen didnt know she was adopted.
What? How could she not know? Thats not something that can be hidden for twenty plus years! Alex suddenly saw the whole conversation flashing before his eyes and he began to feel sick.
Her mum and dad hid it very well with elaborate stories and deceptions. The grandparents wanted to make contact but first just wanted to get a picture of what Kaylen was like, what kinds of things she liked to do. That was why they just wanted you to observe her and watch her from a distance. No one had planned on you two actually meeting before now and getting to know each other. When you confronted her she rang her aunt and got the truth from her at that time. I had thought this was a bad idea. Do you know where she is, because Kaylen told her aunt that she was not going to contact her again? Elaine sighed once again. Hopefully this whole mess would be sorted out soon. I mean how bad could the situation really be. Alex would find Kaylen and they would be friends again and then the grandparents could meet their new granddaughter and everything can go back to normal.
Oh my god, Mum! Was there no way you could tell me this before I made a complete ass of myself. I said some really bad things to Kaylen, I called her a liar, and I am ashamed to remember what I else I said. I do not know if she will ever talk to me again, even if I do find her. I dont believe she didnt know! What type of person does that make me if I couldnt even believe her when she denied everything? Alex rubbed his head; this was all way too much to comprehend.
Oh sweetie, Im sure if you talked to her and explained the situation she will come around. Where you are cannot be that big that you cant find one person. I mean you did it once? Maybe you will have the same kind of luck again. You have to find her Alex! She needs someone to talk to in this time of great sadness. How do you think you would feel if this kind of thing happened to you.
Mum, are you trying to tell me Im adopted? Alex had to at least find something funny about this whole situation. There wasnt much else to laugh about at the moment, other than the complete disaster he made of the Kaylen situation. How could she ever forgive him when he didnt know if he could forgive himself? I suppose there was only one way to find her, get out on the streets and start walking. There are a few major attractions in Rotorua and he would start as soon as he got off the phone with his mother.
Alex, dont be silly. I think you should get out and just start looking. It isnt good for her to be alone at a time like this. You need to think positively and practice what you will say when you find her. Until then, you know I love you son, just keep your head up and your heart open. Elaine finished the conversation with Alex and pulled out her address book. There were two other people in the world that needed to help find Kaylen. If it werent for them then none of them would be in this position now, literally. Elaine dialled the number and waited for the connection.
Chapman-Leith residence, Caroline speaking and how may we help you today.
Hi Caroline. I have just spoken to Alex and I think I know what needs to happen. Elaine had phoned her good friend, the one who had asked her and Alex to help out her family locate Kaylen.
Oh yes, what do you feel is the answer to this perplexing problem? Caroline almost went over the top with her educated and well-articulated speech.
I think your parents need to go to New Zealand themselves. Kaylen is going to have many questions regarding the part of her life unknown until this time. I feel it would be appropriate for them to be there for such time, it is unknown when or if she will return to England and it would show her that they have only the best of intentions. It would also add a couple of people to the search party in case Alex is unable to locate her. I know he rather advantageously let the cat out of the bag we might say, but he dearly cares for her and is out there now at this moment beating himself up over what has been a terrible mix up for everybody. Elaine cared about what Kaylen must be feeling but was also concerned more for what Alex was feeling. It shouldn't be his responsibility wholly to locate and care about Kaylen. These people wanted to be part of her life and they needed to start acting like they cared.
I think that would be a good idea. I will phone them now and get them to make the arrangements. We are all so glad that your son was at least able to find her, even if things have not gone famously and there has been negative circumstances arising. We do care about Kaylen and want to have her happy, and home so we can meet and get to know each other. Even if things do not look too good at the moment this is all for the best. At least Kaylen knows the truth now; she may be hurting but she will feel better. Alex and her will sort things out, I feel confident in that fact.
One hour later Lord Albert and Lady Charlotte Chapman had packed their bags and heading off to Heathrow in their chauffeured driven Rolls Royce to the waiting private plane. They were going to New Zealand to find their granddaughter; they felt bad for everything that had happened. It had all started when Kaylen was first born. They were in turmoil for a month after her birth deciding what the best life for Kaylen would involve. They had not known when they met and talked with Mr and Mrs Knight that twenty three years later they would be meeting their granddaughter in this way, they were not to know the level of deceit that nice couple would use against their precious child. All they could do was think about the pain Kaylen would now be feeling as she sat alone somewhere in the world. Not a day went by when the Chapmans had not thought of Kaylen, the gorgeous baby girl they gave up not because they did not have enough love for her, but for the simple reason that they wanted her to experience a normal life with a mother and a father who loved and cherished her as much as they themselves.
On the other side of the world Kaylen walked around a thermal park. Geysers spewed water into the air and puddles of mud bubbled all around. The whole situation was pushed to the back of her mind as she enjoyed the new and exciting sights, sounds and smells. Being on her own was not too bad, there was no one to tell her what to do or what they wanted to see. There was also no one to yell at her and abuse her for something she didnt even know about. I wonder what Alex is doing? Kaylen sighed as she saw a group of tourist run past laughing chatting, and having fun.
