FAQ

Below there's a list questions with information and resources about self-injury... (SI = self injury)

What's the definition of self-injury?
Self-injury is the commission of deliberate harm to one's own body. The injury is done to oneself, without the aid of another person, and the injury is severe enough for tissue damage (such as scarring) to result. Acts that are committed with conscious suicidal intent or are associated with sexual arousal are excluded.

What is SI?
Self injury is: cutting, punching, kicking, biting, scratching and everything in between.

Why does people SI?
It's an attempt to relieve emotions/feel emotions/prevent further destruction.

What triggers people to injure themselves?
It varies for everyone but well known are anger, depression, worthlessness and other emotions that are stuck inside.

Is it possible to stop SIing?
Yes, it is... on the long term; if you want to stop you will need therapy in most of the cases and it's needed that you want to stop self-injury yourself, so saying 'I stop for my parents', isn't gonna work. It's something you can do only if you're behind it. Otherwise it's just fooling yourself... and others!
