A Brief History of Dr. Solar, Man of the Atom

Dr. Solar, Man of the Atom was a comic first published by Gold Key Comics, in the 1960s. It endured various reincarnations before its final issue, #31, in the 1980s. These issues detailed the exploits of--who else?--Dr. Solar, Man of the Atom, a radioactive superhero who fought crime when he wasn't busy being a scientist in Atom Valley.

Jim Shooter revived the character as Solar, Man of the Atom for VALIANT Comics in 1991 in the historic ALPHA & OMEGA storyline. In the VALIANT Universe, Dr. Phil Seleski was inspired by his boyhood comicbook hero: Dr. Solar (the same Dr. Solar mentioned above). This series lasted 60 issues before it was finally cancelled.

In 1997, another Man of the Atom appeared in Acclaim Comics' "Same as it Never Was" Universe known as VH-2. Actually, 1997 marked the first reappearance of Phil Seleski as Solar, only in another universe. He gave a large portion of his powers to another dimension's Seleskis: twins Frank and Helena. Later Helena was replaced as half of MOTA (as the being formerly known as Solar was referred to) by a woman named Sidne.

2002 brought about rumors of a new relaunch of Dr. Solar, only outside of the VALIANT Universe. Creators on this project included artist Pat Quinn, Chris Sotomayor, and Mike Tomaras. It's because of Pat Quinn, an amazing artist whose work I've admired for some time now, that this website exists (thanks, Pat!). Check out the "Misc" and "Links" page for more of his work.
