     ~ bromides cause rash in baby
     ~ nicotine reduces milk supply
     ~ barbituates make baby drowsy
3.) What types of foods should be given at each stage when introducing solid foods?
     Stage 1 - puree or paste-like foods
     Stage 2 - textured food, soft lumps,  finger foods
     Stage 3 - chopped or minced foods
FOOD OR DRUGS TO AVOID
~ onions and pickles - make mild taste bad
~ bromides - cause infant to have rash
~ nicotine - reduce milk supply
~ barbituates - make baby drowsy
DRAUGHT REFLEX

~ feel "pins and needles" at breasts
~ milk leak from opposite breast infant is nursing on
~ sudden thirst
~ drying sensation of eyes
~ occurs during feeding or when anticipating the feeding
INTRODUCTION TO SOLID FOODS
Stage One
~ baby is 4-6 mos old
~vary flavours so baby won't reject new foods later
~ paste-like or puree consistency foods because baby cannot chew
~ small quantity as milk is still major food source
~ be aware of potential allergenicity

Stage Two
~ baby is 6 - 9 mos old
~ offer textured food, soft lumps and finger foods
~ encourage chewing
~ progress to 3 meals per day

Stage Three
~ 9 mos onward
~ give foods from all 4 food groups
~ baby has teeth so you can give chopped or minced foods
~ baby should be eating 3 meals per day
