One in a Billion Chapter Six Donna was still in
the shower when Jim heard a faint knock on the door. He opened it and found When they arrived at
the factory after eating breakfast at the restaurant, they clocked in and went
to their departments to get ready for a good days work. When the buzzer finally
rang, Donna found herself staring at Jim and wondering if he might like her as
much as she had come to like him. She felt warm inside just seeing him and had emptiness
inside when he wasn't near her. She knew from experience she was falling in
love with him and she was very happy that it was happening with Jim. Donna was
continuing to think of all the good things that Jim had done for her and her
kids when she noticed the other workers walking towards the break room; she had
not heard the buzzer at all. She seen Jim coming towards her and stepped out to
walk beside him as they went to break. After break Donna tried to not think of Jim as much, but
she was actually thinking of him more and more. When she heard the lunch buzzer
ring she almost jumped with joy that she would be spending time with Jim again.
She met him at the time clock as they were going to the restaurant for lunch
again. She was smiling and felt so warm inside when he walked her to his van,
she was almost lightheaded. She actually did feel a little faint when she
touched his hand as they both reached for the door handle at the same time. She
had forgotten what it felt like to be in love. She could only hope he would
feel something towards her also as she didn't know if she could handle being
rejected by him on top of everything else that had been happening in her life
in the past few years. Jim could hardly eat his lunch as he stared at Donna with a
passion he knew was nothing but pure love for her. He wanted more then anything
to spend the rest of his life with her and hoped she would feel the same way
about him even after she found out who he really was. He hoped he hadn't done
something that would end their relationship by using a false name as he only
wanted to see what the factory workers were like and how things were handled
there before deciding to keep it or sell it. He had decided to do both, to keep
the factory, but sell stock in it to the workers there and let them have a say
in a lot of the things that concerned them. This would also let them make part
of the profits too which he figured would in turn make them better workers and
also take more pride in their work. Jim was awakened from his thinking by Donna as she asked if
he thought they should be heading back to work, he checked his watch and looked
around. Almost all the other workers had left already and they only had about
ten minutes to get back and clock in. Jim paid for lunch and left a nice tip, and
then they headed to the van and drove back to the factory. They actually ran
inside and had just clocked in when the buzzer rang. Donna looked at Jim and
just smiled, just laughed a little as he pretended to wipe sweat from his
forehead. They headed to their departments and started busying themselves with
their work. At afternoon break they passed the checks out while
everyone was entering the break room. Donna got hers and as she sat down she
opened it. Her face went sad and she looked as if she was going to cry. Jim
leaned over real close and asked her what was wrong, she explained to him in a
cracking weak voice that she had been having her check garnished since her
mother had died to pay off her debts and she just didn't know how she was going
to make it through the following week on what was left. Jim looked at the
check, it had started out at $528.00 gross and after all was taken out she
ended up with a measly $72.12. Jim was stunned that someone could be expected
to support themselves and two kids on that little amount. He excused himself
saying he needed to use the restroom, but in fact he ran to the front office to
speak with Jennifer. When he reached Jennifer's office he said he needed some
info and would hope that she could help him out. He explained to her that he
wanted to know who it was that was garnishing Donna's check. Jennifer said she
wasn't supposed to tell anyone that info, but since he had helped Donna so much
already she felt she could let him have it. She printed it out from her
computer and handed him the paper. There were three places doing the
garnishment, one was the hospital her mother had been in when she died, one was
the finance company she had used when bought the car she had now, and the final
one was an attorney that had handled her mother's estate sale and matters. Jim
asked to use the phone and Jennifer handed it to him, she then said she would
be back in a few minutes and headed towards the break room. After four phone calls Jim had all the info he needed to clear
Donna's accounts and had paid them off with his credit card. Now she would get
her full pay once again. Jim felt that anyone that would take that much from a
mother trying to raise her children had to be the most ruthless people on
earth. He heard the end of break buzzer ring as he went through the break room
doors. He caught up to Donna just as she was nearing her department and he
stopped her long enough to tell her not to worry about the garnishments
anymore. She asked him why and he told her they were taken care of and from now
on she would get her full pay like she deserved and expected. Then he returned
to the shipping area to finish out his day of work. When the final buzzer rang and Donna and Jim had clocked
out he asked if she would like to go by her place and get her stuff and bring
it to the motel also. She said yes and was really surprised that Jim still used
the term "her place" even though she knew that he knew she had been
living in her car. Jim drove straight to her car in the alley and as they
approached they noticed a man sitting in a small pickup just beyond her car. At
first Donna seemed alarmed, but Jim quickly calmed her saying he had hired the
man to watch her place till she had a chance to return for her things. With
this and what he had told earlier in the factory about the garnishments being
taken care she knew he must love her as much she loved him. She felt so lucky
to have him and hoped that soon she could thank him in a very special way. They
got out and removed all of Donna's and the kids' stuff from the car and loaded
it into the van. Then Jim went to the man in the truck and spoke with him while
Donna sat in the van. She seen Jim hand the man a piece of paper and done some
pointing towards her car and then the man shook his head and Jim returned to
the van. When they left the alley, Jim drove straight to the motel
and it didn't take long to move all the stuff they had brought from the car
inside with Chrissy and Josh helping. Jim slipped his suitcase and laptop out
of the room and into the room next door that he had rented also. Donna seen him
taking his suitcase out and asked if he was leaving, he quickly told her he had
rented the room next door as he didn't think it was proper for them to stay
together in the one room as people might talk and he wanted to protect her
reputation. Donna just melted with the warmth it made her feel to hear of his
concern over her reputation. Jim made sure to speak with Lena outside the room and ask
if he owed her anymore money and made her promise to let him know if he could
ever help her out in any way in the future. She assured she would, but only if
he would also call her again if he needed someone to watch the kids anytime at
all. She told him she didn't have any kids and enjoyed it a lot more then most
could imagine. She said that Chrissy and Josh were two of the best behaved
children she had ever met and she was more then happy to watch them. Jim
thanked her again and she left to head home for supper. When Jim knocked on the door to Donna's room an hour later
after showering and changing into some clean clothes, Josh opened it. Jim saw
Donna sitting in a chair with Chrissy kneeling in front of her. Donna was
brushing Chrissy's long hair. He asked if everyone was ready to go to dinner
and as if rehearsed they answered yes in one voice together. As they started
out the door Donna told Chrissy and Josh to go ahead that she and Jim would be
out in a second. She then pushed the door almost to and hugged Jim tightly as
she kissed him fully on the mouth, letting him feel her passion as she in turn
felt the passion he had for her. The kiss lasted for about three minutes and
left them both a little lightheaded. They stood hugging for a minute or two
longer then headed out the door to join the kids and go to supper. At the restaurant Donna and Chrissy sat across the booth
from Jim and Josh. This way Jim and Donna could look at each other and carry on
a conversation without turning their heads to see each other. Donna spent as
much time just staring at Jim as he did her. It seemed as if the kids were the
only ones actually interested in eating. Donna and Jim hardly touched their
dinner and neither was very hungry. They just sat and looked at each other,
smiling and talking occasionally. Jim did make it a point to ask Donna if she
would be ok for a while tomorrow as he needed to run some and errands and
wouldn't be back till after lunch. She said that they would be ok and asked him
how early he would leave in the morning. He told her about 8 in the morning and
that they would still be able to all have breakfast together. After they finished eating, Jim asked if they wanted to go
to the local mall and do some shopping. Donna pulled him close and mentioned
that her check wasn't much and asked him if he had forgotten that. Jim told her
not to worry everything was taken care of and off they went. They went to a
clothing store first and Jim told Chrissy and josh that they could both get
three complete outfits each. He then turned to Donna and told her she could any
five outfits she wanted as well. After they had picked out their outfits and
paid for them they went to a shoe store and Jim told them they could each get
three pairs of any kind of shoes they wanted. The next store for them to go
into was an electronics store where Jim bought each of them and himself a cell
phone that they could use to stay in touch with each other. He said that it
would have come in handy this week if Josh and Chrissy had each had one with
them at school and Donna had one at work. Donna agreed and was so thankful to
have it as all the rest of the items he bought for them. Jim also bought three
new laptop computers for them so the kids could do their homework on them and
Donna could start managing her money on one. Then they took all their packages and headed back to the
motel. Once everything was carried in, Jim excused himself and said he needed
to get some rest as he a long day ahead of him in the morning. Donna gave him a
strong hug and kiss before bidding him a goodnight. She was very reluctant to
let him go as she would have loved to have held him and kissed him for as long
as she could. Jim told the kids goodnight and then went to his room. He got
dressed for bed and before long was sleeping soundly. Dreaming of Donna and how
happy she made him. He dreamed of how their lives would be if they were married
and what all they could do together as well as how much better the kids would
have it to have a daddy around more
often. In the next room Donna had changed into her night clothes
and was lying in the bed thinking of how much she had missed being held by a
man, and how much it meant to her to have someone care enough to buy her
things. She fell asleep and dreamed of how happy she was to have Jim in her
life. She dreamed of how their lives would be if they married and how much the
kids would enjoy having him as their daddy. She slept better and rested more
that night than she had in a long time. |
