SELECT DRIVING SCHOOL Mission BC
ICBC now has practice knowledge test questions online. Before going there, we recommend you read the advice below.
Former sample knowledge test questions
Before ICBC introduced its online test questions, it had given out a short list of samples. (The actual test has 50 questions drawn by computer from a store of hundreds of questions, so each test is different, and you have to get a minimum of 40 correct.) See how you do with these, then give some thought to our recommendations: (Answers at bottom.)
A. What is the minimum following distance you should leave between your vehicle and a motorcycle in front of you? - Two seconds.
- Three seconds.
- Four seconds.
- Five seconds.
B. If you begin to skid on black ice, what is the safest thing to do? - Accelerate and steer in the direction you want to go.
- Brake and steer in the direction you want to go.
- Ease off the accelerator and steer to the side of the road.

C. Driving too close behind the car in front of you is dangerous because - The driver in front of you may not be able to see behind his car.
- You may not be able to see what is up ahead.

- Other drivers may not have enough space to change lanes in front of you.
D. When pulling away from the curb, you should - Shoulder check, then pull out when safe.

E. The best reason for not using a cellphone while driving is - Your ability to see and hear hazards may be reduced.

- It may be difficult to hold on to the phone while driving.
Answers: (A) 2 ... (B) 4 ... (C) 2 ... (D) 3 ... (E) 1
Our Advice: It's necessary to pick the best answer of the four choices, so it's essential to understand, not just memorize, what is taught in the manual. (But... it's also true that certain questions must be answered by remembering the exact wording from the manual in which case the people who think they can just rely on "common sense" are lost.) Or, the best answer of the four may not be the absolute best answer there could be, but it would be the correct choice to be made. For example, in question (D) above, none of the answers is actually correct, because the correct procedure would be, "Check your mirrors, signal, shoulder check the blind spot, then pull out when safe." (Pages 57 and 58, "RoadSense for Drivers - BC's Safe Driving Guide") But of the four choices, number 3 would be best.
Remember, too, that each actual question is accompanied by an illustration or picture, some of which must be looked at in detail to arrive at the correct answer.
A good strategy... If you find a question too difficult, use the Skip option -- move on to the next question. Possibly you can postpone dealing with that question until the end of the test, and if you already got a minimum of 40 out of 50, you'll have passed without having to get the tough one right. One final thing: When you do your knowledge test, be sure to mark the actual answer you meant to mark. It's quite easy to press the wrong button. Good luck!
