"From earliest Christian times baptism was the first of the three essential rites of Christian initiation. --- In doctrine baptism represented not only acceptance into the Christia society but mystical union with Christ, purification from sin, and regenereation into a new life. In view of the importance of the cremony the scene of Christ's won baptism was frequently representedin Christian art,--." <The Oxford Companion of Art> Painting Christ is standing up to the ankles in the river (the Jordan). John the Baptist is pouring the water over the head of Christ. On the other side a few angels are waiting with Christ's clothes in their hands. God's hands and a dove are shown over Christ. |
