Master & Apprentice

Andrea Verrocchio & Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo became an apprentice in the shop of the painter and sculptor Verrocchio. He painted the left-hand angel in the Baptism of Christ by Verrocchio which drove his master to give up painting and concentrated on sculpture. He saw the angel and understood his pupileh's genuine.

Source MATTHEW 3:13-17
  1. Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
  2. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"
  3. But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented.
  4. And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting him;
  5. and a voice from heaven, saying "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
MARK 1:9-11
  1. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
  2. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove;
  3. and a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son, with thee I am well pleased."
LUKE 3:21-22
  1. Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, he heaven was opened,
  2. and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form, as a dove, and a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased."
JOHN 1:29-34
  1. The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
  2. This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, for he was before me.'
  3. I myself did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel."
  4. And John bore witness, "I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him.
  5. I myself did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holly Spirit.'
  6. And I have seen and have borne witness hat this is the Son of God."
Baptism

"From earliest Christian times baptism was the first of the three essential rites of Christian initiation. --- In doctrine baptism represented not only acceptance into the Christia society but mystical union with Christ, purification from sin, and regenereation into a new life. In view of the importance of the cremony the scene of Christ's won baptism was frequently representedin Christian art,--."
