This little rant is due to me going on FanFiction.Net and reading about a million and half of random HorohoroxRen, MantaxYoh and one very small, but very cute JunxPyron.
Now, I've taken the liberty to note that there barely were any Mary-Sues. (That I could find. I wasn't really looking for them either. I was scanning for the lovely words 'HoroRen' or 'RenHoro' or 'R/H' or something of the sort.) Thank goodness for this! Usually, you'll see them anywhere and everywhere!
The one Mary Sue that I happened to notice was along the likes of: "A new girl came to town and she was a powerful shaman. Hao/Yoh/Ren/Horohoro/insert-bishounen-here mends his ways and falls in love with her." Well, it didn't really go like that, but I managed to interpret it that way anyway. This rant isn't intended to flame--wait, it is. Oh well! ^_^ I love making fun of Mary Sues. And I love making fun of very few things.
What pretty much irked me, however, was the mass quantities of Anna/Yoh. Now, I can understand that people would want to write about them. Sure, I mean they're engaged, they don't seem to love each other much, it's a canon shipping, meant to be, lalala. But where's the originality?
Personally, if I wanted to see a het pairing besides JunxPyron, I would like to see YohxTamao.
For a long time, I had thought that HoroRen was a very popular couple. Most of the people that I've seem to met really like that pairing. There's countless Japanese sites on them, and even one in English. But, on FanFiction.Net there's barely any of them at all! That, and perhaps they've been swamped by the mass quantities of YohxAnna, but oh well.
And for starters, people tend to overexaggerate the personality gliches of characters.
* Yoh isn't that serious. I've seen him portrayed as a love-sick puppy (wouldn't 13-year-old-shamans have better things to do?) and I've seen him... well, way too serious. What happened to the kawaii "Eh...he, he!" or "Sankyuuu!"
* Horohoro isn't that stupid. Sure, he's not that bright. But once again, the overexaggeration is... well, you know.
* Ren isn't that mean. I mean, he has a heart you know. If anything he's more of an egotistical manslut. Minus the manslut. That's only added because of his sexy outfit. Writers tend to forget that his ego is larger than his shark-headed-hair.
* Hao is cheerful, yes. But people tend to make him cheerful to the point that he's not evil. Don't forget his intentions, people. Even if, you're not writing about a Shaman King. You could at least make him slightly mean--to the point that he doesn't have regard for much life.
* Anna doesn't talk that much. Enough said.
* Poor Manta! He's always the 'extra character' in all these fics. And mostly, he tends to be left out. When he is in a fic, it's angsty.
Personally, I think Shaman King fics are meant to be funny. Or at least have many funny aspects. That's what Hiroyuki Takei, in my opinion, intended. To make a funny manga with the intention of also throwing in things about yourself and fighting, you know, the works. Don't kill people it's bad.
I'm not saying that I'm an expert at these things, mind you. I never said I was. In fact, if I tried to write something serious I might die. But anyway, I'm just saying these are some tiny things I've noticed in the fanfiction.
Don't get me wrong! They're not all bad! I've read some purely excellent fanfiction out there. Actually, an Authoress that goes by 'Checkers' writes some really hilarious HoroRen fics that I've taken quite a liking to.
Ah, I'm done for now. Ta~!
