I have a question for you then, when a writer kills a character and they die a noble death does that mean that the writer dislikes the character? When a character changes psycholo ically in reaction to a recent event does that mean that the writer has done the character a disfavor? I would hardly think that anyone would agree that Kate wrote If He Should Return with the idea of bashing Seifer, Rinoa or Fujin in mind. In fact, I bel eve that be having Fujin die the way she did, giving seifer the choice between the girl who loved him and a dream that was impossible to achieve, IHSR was really telling the poignant story of the workings of a young man's mind. the purpose of IHSR was nev r to "get everyone together" so that they could all get married and live happily ever after. IHSR was a story about deeper things. Rinoa's choice to pretend to be a normal girl despite knowing who and what she was, illustrated her devotion to Squall but t at was an impossible devotion if she refused to admit to herself that Squall truly did love her and would cross that final boundary to be with her. However her delusion prevents her from seeing that in him in the final chapter of IHSR. It's a sad story t ld with love for the characters and their inner selves but it's NOT a story written with spite, sloppiness or cliched themes. If you can't look past the need to "get them together" so that they could reproduce and live a typical middle class life together than maybe Kate Lorraine is not the author for you. |
