Miaka Yuki is a normal junior high student cramming for high school tests. Her and her best friend, Yui, find a book in the library called "The Universe of the Four Gods". They are transported inside the book and encounter slavers, but are save just in time by a boy with the Chinese symbol for 'demon' on his forehead.
They are transported back to the real world, only for Miaka to have a fight with her mom. Frustrated, she runs to the library and finds the book. She enters the book once more and is saved from trouble once again by the same boy.
Both of them are arrested by the emperor's guards. They meet the emperor, Hotohori, and first mistake him for a beautiful woman. The emporer tells them of the legend that says one will come from another world and inherit the powers of Hong-nan's God, Suzaku (the Pheonix). Miaka becomes the Preistess of Suzaku and has to find her seven celestial warriors, two of which are Hotohori and Tamahome (The boy with demon on his forehead).
Miaka is able to travel between the two worlds as long as the book is open, but some one enters the library and closes the book, trapping Miaka inside.
Desperate to get back home, they decide to travel to Tai Yi-Jun, the creator of the 'Universe of the Four Gods", along with a new-found warrior, Nuriko. Together the three warriors lend Miaka power to get back to her world, while Yui is helping Miaka from outside of the book. Miaka makes it out, only to find out Yui is now missing.
Miaka goes back to the book to find Yui, and also to satisfy her desire to see Tamahome. Another celestial warrior pops up, the happy-go-lucky Chichiri.
Miaka is finally reunited with Yui. They are about to leave the Qu-Dong palace and return to Hong-Nan together, but Yui overhears Miaka telling Tamahome she came back to see him.
Yui leads Miaka into the prayer room of Seiryu, where no Suzaku warrior may enter. One of the Seiryu warriors (Nakago) attempts to kill Miaka, but she is saved by Chichiri and Tamahome. Driven by her feelings of betrayal, Yui accepts the position of Priestess of Seiryu, officially making her and Miaka enemies.
Now Miaka must find the other three warriors of Suzaku to summon the God and be reunited with Yui once again.
