Tamahome is a very interesting character. He is very protective of Miaka. He sacrifices himself for the sake of others and he won't backdown from any enemy. He eventually falls in love with Miaka and will do anything for her. He always thinks of her before everything.

At first glance one would think Hotohori is a female. He had a lonely upbringing, and therefore seems like one to hide his feelings. He looks very cold and harsh when he's sitting on the throne, but is actually very warm and peaceful. He's attracted to Miaka's warmth and falls in love with her. He (like Tamahome) will do anything to make sure Miaka is safe. He respects the fact that Miaka and Tamahome are in love, and pretty much backs off, but still loves Miaka. While Tamahome is away, Hotohori protects Miaka for him.

The Suzaku Warrior Kang-Lin
Nuriko first appears to be a girl, but later we find out that 'she' is really a 'he'. He is seemingly in love with Hotohori, at is at first jealous of Miaka, but he knows even if he was a woman, he'd be no contest for her. He ocasionally wears guys clothes. Later on it is found out he cross dresses because he is mourning over the loss of his sister.
