| INTERNSHIP SUMMARY | |||||||||
| Over the past five quarters I have had the opportunity to reside at one internship. I chose to intern at the Lynden School District Family~Community Services office. I interned for Mrs. Carole Kornelis, Family~Community Services Coordinator and District Nurse. My duties included the following: *Take primary responsibility to be prompt in reporting to FCS 16 hours per week *Demonstrated the ability to work with diverse populations *Demonstrated the ability to communicate effectively both written and verbal *Demonstrated the ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with others as part of a team *Demonstrated organizational skills and a commitment to follow through *Demonstrated the ability to problem solve, analyze and resolve related issues *Demonstrated the ability to work independently *Assisted in developing, implementing, and evaluating activities and strategies to encourage all youth and parents/community members to be involved in education (Big Brothers Big Sisters, as well as other mentoring/tutoring programs) *Monitored continuity of case management services for targeted children/families *Developed relationships with district wide school staff *Demonstrated the ability to maintain confidentiality of all involved particpants *Increased knowledge of family empowerment *Increased knowledge and experience in working with community agencies that serve families. *Assisted in development and implementation of CAN DO! Summer Tutoring Program *Increased knowledge of the school counselor's position in the school district and their relationship to Family~Community Services *Facilitated a small group "Take Charge" for High School aged girls *Assisted in development and implementation of "Teen Screen" within the school distrct As you can see I have learned a lot over the last 5 quarters. I have come away with knowledge about the importance of empowerment and support for clients and their families. I was able to work with students and their families one-on-one in a case management setting where those clients were able to build-up trust in me. I saw many families grow over the last year and a half and realize that my hard work pays off when the support they recieve from our agency begins to get smaller and smaller and they take on our role with other families. The role that ongoing support has within the community is important. Youth and their families can continue to grow as they know they have a support system to fall back on if they need it. My experience at the Lynden School District Family~Community Services office has made me knowledgeable about the roles of families within our community and the daily struggles they go through. |
