To do
You personally could: Put on a pulli to keep warm Change to
energy saving bulbs and never buy any incandescent bulbs ever more Reduce
your farmed meat eating (or turn veggie if you like) Shower
shorter (and with a an efficient shower head) Drive
economically. Get a small fuel-efficient car Use
public transport, and bike if possible Order
groceries via internet, which are delivered to you with one truck, instead of
all individuals driving to the supermarket You could do the following larger investments: Lower
temperature in your house or flat (spec. when not at home, there are
regulators that lower T during certain hours) Solar
heating on roof for warm water PV on
roof if you decide to pay the additional cost (energetically the
manufacturing pays off – you’d get independent for electricity supply as
advantage) For society following has been suggested, with a
reasonable energetical pay-off (economically less
clear, ofcourse. That’s probably why regulation is
necessary): Start working
from home with an internet connection Shift
transport of goods from trucks to ships and rail Currently,
only about 1% of the energy in gasoline is used to move the occupant of an
automobile. Most energy is lost to engine inefficiency, friction, aerodynamic
drag, rolling drag and acceleration. Ultra-light cars made of strong
carbon-steel composites may double efficiency of automobiles. Hybrid
automobiles, available today, allow the engines to run more efficiently and
also nearly double the efficiency of gasoline usage. Newly
constructed buildings should be built as energy efficient as possible (more
insulation) If you
are against regulation (me too, often), wait for energy prices to go through
the roof (ohh, let that happen sooner than later),
and then the above suggestions will come through market forces. However I
fear that we will f..k up
the economy as well as the climate the next ten years irreversibly if we
don’t set the frames for a sustainable society now. When the oil is out,
burned wastefully, we will say “oh, now we don’t have enough raw materials to
fix the problem”. Think about this and choose your path. Together our decisions makes the society that we want. |
