Look at the technology
in all its glory!
So This is the big technology breaking out here. When I say big I mean big. This is a double cartridge, allowing you to do things you never thought possible in other sonic games. What you do is plug a sonic game into the sonic and knuckles cartridge then cunningly shove it into your mega drive and voila! extras galore! In sonic 1 you hold the a, b and c buttons at the same time to unlock the blue sphere puzzles out of sonic three except this time there's 30 000 of the buggers! Sonic 2 lets you play as knuckles throughout the game. Sonic three doubles the lifespan by joining the two games together with a few alterations to make the story fit. You can also play as knuckles when joined. And the actual game! It's got to be one of the best. The levels and bosses are great and the gliding, climbing knuckles is a real treat. Phew! Now the review . . .
LEVELS
The levels are very good in this game. Mushroom hill is a fairly good start and then the flying battery zone is well designed. Sandopolis is the only bad zone as its a tad boring. Lava reef zone is another contender for the best sonic zone ever with it being the first lava themed sonic zone in any game. The hidden palace zone is a really short zone but somewhat important to the story. Sky santury zone as fantastic. It's in mid air and has some elements from sonic 1 & 2. Death egg zone is pretty hard and is a good final zone but still no scrap brain. Then the secret level, doomsday is absolutely class were your hyper sonic and you have to fight off a couple of bosses after souping up your ring supply. That's right, Hyper! If you connect sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles you can get hyper sonic, knuckles or tails by collecting all emeralds in both. Hyper tails has little birdies to help him fight off enemies. The other two are white. Sonic can defeat all enemies on screen and knuckles can bash through some walls you never thought possible. This game really is good if you have other sonic games, especially sonic 3. 9/10
BOSSES
The second boss is a good idea and although th third boss seems an old idea its actually brand new in this game. Then theres the return of level one sonic 1 boss with the swingy ball and metal sonic in sky sanctury. The last level boss is brilliant. It is this gigantic robotnik ten times the size of the sonic 2 one. First he tries to crush you with his fingers and then he fires a big laser beam at you which at the first few attempts is pretty hard to dodge. Over all some great bosses. 9/10
MUSIC
Flying battery zone and lava reef are good. However there is no stand out music like in all the previous sonics. I haven't really got much else to say here 8/10
REPLAYABILITY
The amount of extras this unlocks and amount of things in it, if you have all the previous sonic games you'll be using this with everyone of them over and over again. Luckily you can save when you plug in sonic three so you not left there for about 10 hours in a row trying to complete it. 10/10
TOTAL
Well, because of all the extras and the fantastic revists to techniques used in sonic one, it kind of makes you forget about the shallow game that was sonic 3.
10/10
