Sonic's first dreamcast game. This is the first proper 3D sonic game and the most successful launch title for the dreamcast. If you played this as your first dreamcast game then it was a pretty class game as you had never seen sonic like this before. The stages were fun fuelled roller coaster rides were you basically went as fast as you could. However there was an added RPG element were you had to trudge along linear landscapes looking for the next stage. You'll find how this spoiled the game as we go on to the review . . .
LEVELS
Now there are different types of levels here. For all the characters there is the RPG open bits were you have to walk around to find a special stage. For sonic it is basically running as fast as you can and it is a brilliant roller coaster of a level. For tails it's the same as sonic except you can fly which makes good use for some short cuts along the stages. Knuckles has to find shards of the big green emerald and you do this by using the emerald sensor at the bottom of the screen which goes redder the nearer you are to the emerald. This stage is a bit boring. Amy has more of a puzzle element were you have to work out some fairly taxing puzzles along the way. E102 Gamma has fun but easy stages which you'll complete in no time. The last character is Big cat. These levels are tedious and you have to catch a frog in these really annoying fishing games. Really only the sonic and tails levels are worth the trudgeing through RPG stages. Thre prospect of a stage though keeps you going through the weaker parts of the game and if you complete it with all characters you get a special super sonic boss stage. 6/10
BOSSES
So here we come to the boss bits of the game. Basically all of these are pathetic and easy including the final boss of each character. The only boss worth its weight in gold is the super sonic one were you have to kill off a fully charged chaos with seven emeralds inside him. This is a tough but fun boss were you slide down a big water thing belonging to choas and then hit him when you get the chance. It's a bit hard to explain really. Overall though th bosses are pretty pathetic. 3/10
MUSIC
Not to bad but the music isn't really something you can remember. The music playing now is a bit daft sounding on the internet but it's the best music on the game. The tails music is catchy. I wanna fly... Not too bad anyway so the mark is pretty good here. 7/10
REPLAYABILITY
You will probably play the sonic and tails stages over and over again but once you've completed it that's about all you'll do. 6/10
TOTAL
The sonic and tails stages are somewhat fantastic and you'll keep coming back to them but the rest of the game is pretty shallow and boring
6/10
