If I told you five years ago that an original sonic game would be on a nintendo machine you would be quite surprised, yeah? But if I told you that an original sonic game would appear on a nintendo console before an original mario game you would be shocked. Well thats whats happening here right now. There may be mario advance but thats just a copy of the old mario bros 2. Here we have an original sonic game that mixes sonic adventure with the good old mega drive outings. This time around you can play as sonic, knuckles, tails or amy through 8 amazing levels. so.. on to the review
LEVELS
Well there are 8 of them in all. I only have 7 of them though because the last level is unlocked by getting all emeralds and I only have 3! Anyway the first zone is like all first sonic zones and is a gentle start. The second zone is the "stand out" zone. It's called secret base zone but I like to call it the industrial zone because it seems like your gliding through cities on thin wires but it is some sort of base zone but it's very fun because like I said you grab on to wires and slide down like in the movies. Then there's the casino zone which is easy and the ice mountain zone which has the odd annoying underwater section. The angel island zone is quite hard and is set in the sky on this grey platform. Then theres zone six act 1 which is really long but managable if your good at sonic. Then the next act is easy and on to the final boss zone which i'll explain later. All these levels ar mostly very good but I haven't come to the special stages yet . . . This is where you get the emeralds and it's bloody hard. you go down a 3d tube collecting rings and it's really hard to get yourself over the rings. I only have 3 emeralds because a. I cant find the next stage and b. thyey are just too hard. mabye in a long while i'll get super sonic and the all elusive special level. 9/10
BOSSES
nearly all the bosses are easy. the boss in act six is quite hard but the reason this section is going to get a good score is because of the saving grace of the final boss stage. You expect a really hard boss but then the first boss from sonic 1 appears with the music and all! he takes for hits and it's pretty damn humourous. Then in all its glory comes the first boss of sonic 2! with the fantastic old music. he takes four hits as well. By now your laughing your head off if your a fan of old sonic bosses but then a hard boss comes up which happens to be a great boss. he has four moves, a rock shooting at you, the beam from the last s &k boss, moving across the screen and a hand that grabs at you. He is quite challenging but if you stay close and hit him just as he pops up you'll beat him. So because I like this level so much, the game gets top score 10/10
MUSIC
Well this music is the only music I could find for sonic advance. It's the first level music and it's alright. The rest of the music is like old sonic music and some of it is quite catchy but there is no stand out tune so im not too fussed about the music in this one appart from the cameo appearance of sonic 2 boss 1. 7/10
REPLAYABILITY
This game has a huge amount of replay. firat of all there's four characters to do the game with (even though amy sucks) then theres the emeralds if you could be bothered although you do get super sonic! Then there is a brilliant addition that im surprised no other sonic game had, time trial mode. Thisn is so addictive as you build up times and try beating them all the time. It has that one more go factor. Heres a challenge. try and beat my time of 42:68 seconds in the first zone act 1 as sonic. I thought my 42:98 was good but then I got that which I think is quite hard to beat although I could improve on it. 10/10
TOTAL
Well this game almost has it all. If the music where slightly better and the special stages wern't so annoying it would get top score but as it stands heres the score
9/10
