A movie review.

America's Sweethearts

Okay, I'm not ashamed to admit it.  I like "romantic comedies".   I really like these actors - especially John Cusack.  I mean, it's an all star cast.  This movie could have been great.  But it isn't.

The Bad
The script was weak.  The story line had the feeling of being quickly thrown together.  The so-called romance between Julia & John was never properly developed.  It was as if the writers didn't want to bother with the details.
Most of the characters were unbelievable.  Zeta-Jones' character was over the top (not in a good way).  We get the point.  She's a bitch... enough already.    Hank Azaria's spanish character was ridiculous.  The accent sounded more like a speech impediment.  What was the point of Robert's fat suit?  Was it supposed to be funny?  More like cheesey.

The Good
There were some funny parts.  The acting was fairly strong overall.  Even though you get the impression that Julia & John are just a little embarassed with the lines.  It's as if they might have realized how aweful this movie was during the middle of the shooting.

Bottom Line
Not a bad video rental.  See it as a matinee at the most.  And lose any expectations that you have before viewing.  That way you can just enjoy the thing at face value.  Mildly entertaining.
