Fr. John Flanagan

Dean of SE Deanery

7955 Real Road

San Antonio, Texas, 78263

Dear Fr. John,

I have had a wonderful experience being Deanery Resource Coordinator for the SE Deanery.  After almost ten years with the deanery I think it is time to move on. Please accept this letter as notice of my departure as Deanery Resource Coordinator.

With your permission my plan is that the February 18, 2009 meeting of the priests of the deanery will be my last meeting.

In the mean time I will organize with our lay leaders so that all of our plans for 2008-2009 year will be fulfilled.  Please note the list of programs and lay leaders who may take responsibility for these programs until a new Deanery Resource Coordinator is found.

In the last ten years we have had about a thousand lay ministers trained at our annual Leadership Gathering. (See the list attached) We have served 285 engaged couples in the Unitas Marriage Preparation Program. Over 2000 kids have been ministered to in the three annual deanery programs for them. See attached the impressive  list of topics we have had for the secretaries program.  In recent years we have had some success with the deanery Adult Faith Formation and Bible Study Programs. But most important are the relationships that have developed between the thirteen parishes of the SE Deanery as is exemplified in the SED Pastoral Council.

I will be returning to my home town of Memphis where I have a large family and beChaplain to Christian Brothers High School.  It has been a blessing for me to serve the priests and people of the SED. God’s choicest blessings on you all.

Peace,

Friar Maury Smith, ofm

List of Lay Leaders who could continue the SED 2008-2009 Program.

These people will be contacted to supervise these program.

SED Pastoral Council

Will be electing a new chair January 24, 2009.

In March they meet to brainstorm the focus of the 2009 Leadership Gathering.

In April the SED PC sends 2-3 members to the Priest’s meeting to discuss the possible focus

and the focus is decided at this meeting.

Unitas Marriage Preparation

John and Lupe Beckett are already the coordinators.

And we have the 2009 schedule in place.

Secretaries Continuing Education

January 28, 2009 we meet to plan the 2009 schedule.

I will obtain the speakers and get it organized.

We will elect a chair person to keep things going.

Adult Faith Formation February 25, 2009.

Jill Lewis has helped with this from the beginning.

It would be good to have Jill meet with the priests at a SED meeting to discuss

the next theme for our Adult Faith Formation.

We have been using the materials from the Center for Learning which Jill introduced me to.

Bible Study Program, March 5 and 12, 2009.

The committee is in place: Patricia Viera, Daryl Wagoner and Stan Whitener.

       The SED PC oversees this.

Youth Ministry

We have the next event January 24, 2009.

And then after that is only the World Youth Day which the archdiocese organizes.

Lalo and Bernie Navarro of St. Cecilia are the most experienced.

I will ask them to help with organizing the 2009-2010 program in August, 2009.

And I would suggest Ester Perry be approached to be the new SED Resource Coordinator.

List of Topics for Secretaries Continuing Education

                                           1999-2008

These topics were chosen by the secretaries.

We have had outstanding speakers who have taught the secretaries

many things they wanted to know. The secretaries meet every two months at 11 am with

lunch afterward to network, to support, to solve problems, to deal with common situations.

They get to know one another and then feel free to call one another for help.

In the early years beginning in 1999 the secretaries met to share helpful ideas

and to support one another. A lot of problem solving was done.
