*Birdman of Rapcatraz
Rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard (real name is Russell Jones),
who vowed to live on "birdseeds" while eluding police
in New York and Los Angeles, landed back in custody
while trying to place an order at a McDonald's
restaurant. The 31-year-old fugitive escaped Oct. 17
from a California drug-rehabilitation center where he
was undergoing treatment after violating probation.
His probation stemmed from 1999 charges of making
"terroristic" threats and wearing a bulletproof vest.
Ol' Dirty Bastard, formerly known as Big Baby Jesus,
stunned hundreds of fans last week by showing up for a
concert with his band Wu-Tang Clan at New York's
Hammerstein Ballroom.
"I can't stay on stage too long tonight -- the cops
is after me," he told the crowd, saying he planned to
become "like a bird" living off "birdseeds or whatever
... you'll see."

* Prince William, is starting at Scotland's oldest
university, St Andrews pretty soon. But it has a
bizzare student knees-up midway through the autumn
term which empties the chemists' shelves of shaving
foam in the normally sleepy mediaeval town. And the a
gigantic foam fight takes place.
Officially, it is a chance for first year students to
choose their 'academic parents' -- seniors who act as
mentors for the university's new entrants.
"Unofficially, it is a chance for men to dress up as
women, women just to dress up, and then both sexes to
cake each other in huge quantities of white muck."
(That bit is a direct quote from a reputable news
source. I'm shocked.)

*Talk about a poison pen letter
Three civil servants studying records left behind by
East Germany's Stasi secret police have suffered
complaints ranging from stomach pains to insomnia
after handling contaminated files, it emerged on
Wednesday. The documents had belonged to operatives
of the Stasi's "Operativ-Technischer Sektor" or
Technical Operations Section, infamous for methods
such as furtively exposing political opponents to
radiation. Neither the purpose of the files nor the
precise chemicals found on them was known. The Stasi
espionage operation was the most extensive ever
created, employing an army of helpers to spy on
friends, family and lovers.

*Calcyummy
A Colombian woman who long complained of stomach
problems has been found to be carrying a calcified
fetus from a pregnancy four decades ago, doctors said.
Otilia Castro, 72, evidently became pregnant when she
was about 32 but the child developed outside the
uterus, in her lower abdominalcavity, and grew to be
10 inches (25 cm) long and weigh 3.5 pounds (1,200
grams).
The foetus was discovered when Castro was X-rayed for
what was initially suspected to be a tumor.

*Major Sex change
The hot-blooded struggle over arguably the most
valuable piece of real estate in cyberspace -- the
rights to the name "sex.com", was ended this week. The
site gets as many as 25 million hits each day, and
could be worth as much as $100 million.
U.S. District Judge James Ware ordered Stephen
Cohen, who has turned the sex.com Web site into a
multimillion pornography business, to turn the address
over to San Francisco entrepreneur Gary Kremen -- who
had the foresight to register the address in 1994, at
the dawn of the Internet age. According to Kremen's
lawyers, Cohen took control of the sex.com address in
1995 by presenting forged transfer of ownership
documentation to Network Solutions Inc., which
oversees the allocation of Web site addresses.

*Cockey Spaniards
The vice-president of the Spanish Paralympic Committee
(CPE) resigned on Thursday after allegations that
Spain's Olympic delegation included athletes with no
handicaps to boost the country's medal tally in
Sydney. This followed Carlos Ribagorda, a journalist
who became a member of the gold medal-winning
basketball team, alledging that he and nine team mates
were not subjected to any medical or psychological
tests to check their eligibilty, and claiming he
played for the basketball team for over two years but
had no mental handicap.
The games were Spain's most successful Paralympics.
The team won 107 medals and finished third in the
medals table behind Australia and Britain.

Miss India, 18-year-old student Priyanka Chopra, was
crowned Miss
World 2000 on Thursday in London's Millennium Dome
before a projected
television audience of two billion people around the
globe. She was
the fifth Indian to win the famous pageant in its
50-year history and
had been hotly fancied by the bookmakers to land the
$100,000 prize.
(My favourite, Miss N.Ireland was knowcked out in the
first round).
