An Experiment

The picture on the right is painted by a friend of mine. Not someone that does many paintings, but for some reason had the urge to paint THIS PARTICULAR painting.

I would like you to make your own inferences about the painting, and the mental health of the painter.

The responses I get will be put up on this page.

I am Bilbo Baggins, elf to the stars.

Comments:
Well, as an elf, it's pretty obvious to me that this person is of two
minds.

The right side (or 'hemisphere') appears dark and foreboding. The word
"DEATH" appears scrawled on something that looks like a Big Feast choc
ice. The red of this side of the brain signifies, in a rather trite
way, blood and foreboding... perhaps donating this right side of the head
a note of foreboding.

The left side of the brain (or 'left hemisphere') also shows a certain
darkness, but the green adds a note of serenity, of satisfaction, aided
by the airy blues. The central crystal suggests a specialness, a gem of
thought or character, something to hold onto and cherish. The brown
structure signifies a resting place for this gem... a home, or a certain
sense of security. This security would protect the gem from the
encroaching darkness that is coming in from the left hand side of the skull (or
"noggin"). One could also suggest that the left hand side of this head
(or "brainbox") is cavernous and deep, as shown by the two-layered
effect of the blue and green paint. This could suggest a large resource of
"good" to combat the death and rage of the right hand side. Finally on
this side, the artist has placed cursory brush strokes of black over
the green and blue cavern. Although this initially suggests the 1960s
footballer Bobby Charlton, this could also be used to highlight the !
'good' side, to bring attention to it, and to increase its importance.

Even though this painting initially looks like the work of a madman, it
contains much psychoanalysable material. I feel this painting comes
from the resonances of the pain (imagined or otherwise) of adolescence,
possibly dealing with the loss of a friend or family member contrasted
with the hope and light of the continuation of life for the artist.
However, this hope is being troubled on two sides - the remembrance of the
artist's family or friend loss, but also by the darkness within himself,
possibly his consideration of his own mortality.

I am Bilbo Baggins, and all I say is true!

Your Comments:
First of all: where's the rest of the painting?
The eagle on top of the scull represents dreams. death is death and the
lightbulb light. the red and green represents traffic lights: perhaps
this person has a dream of becoming a traffic controller? However, the
blue and the one ear points in another direction. The eagle pecks at the
scull, making a crack in it and death is popping up from a shopping
bag. if we interpret the ear to be a mobile phone and the light bulb to be
an air ballon:this is a person who is afraid of communication, (mobile
phone leads to death), is broke (death from shopping). the crack in the
head symbolises a split in desires and goals, but this crack is not big
enough to split the scull in two, the Santa Clause side and the
Superman side are still linked together  shall I be nice or shall I be strong,
shall I be likable or shall I be an arsehole? This conflict will reach
a conclusion either whenn the scull cracks (ending in disaster) or when
the eagle flies away leaving only birdshit as a memorance of a
mental disaster that could have been. Since the rest of the face is
not visible it is impossible to conclude how this conflict will end.
