Cosmological Proof for God's Existence
Proof of Avecina
Abu Ali Sina "Avecina" (10th century) Introduction Avecina Persian philosopher and physician invented this proof for existence of God based on terms of Necessary Existence and Possibly Existence. Avecina wrote several books. Two of them are famous for his choice of name for them. One is called "Ghanoon" and the other is called "Shafaa". "Ghanoon" in Arabic means "Law". A suitable name for a logic and philosophy book. "Shafaa" means "Healing". A suitable name for a medical book. But content of the "Shafaa" book is logic and philosophy and content of the "Ghanoon" book is medicine. It can be guessed that his reasoning for this interesting choice can be that acquiring philosophical knowledge that hopefully can lead to wisdom can heal human mind. Proof of God's existence is from "Shafaa" book. An interesting story As it is usual when people do not understand someone start hating it. A superficial priest of the mosque called Abu Ali Cina heretic. When he heard it, he smiled and said: "If there is one man who knows God is me. I proved His existence, I proved every single of His qualities and these people call me heretic. If I am heretic then there should not be any believer in town.He also proved all qualities of God. This is an overview. In the name of God, the merciful the compassionate.May the power of God be with us against cursed Satan. About the authors Some part of this proof is from "Farabi" (9th century) and some from "Abu Ali Sina" (10th century). Both philosophers were born in Iran. Preface One day a man visited a great Gnostic "Shams Tabrizi" (13th century) and said: I have invented a proof of the existence of God." Shams replied, "Who are you to prove that? Just try to obtain a good position near God. That will be more beneficial for you."However, fully exercising the mind with philosophy and logic help argument our faith. Definitions First we define two categories. Then we decide whether they exist or do not exist."Necessary Existent" is something which, by definition, is created by itself. It is not that there is a cause and then there is another effect. The Necessarily Existent is both cause and effect. Cause and effect are one unit."Possibly Existent" is something which, by definition, is created by some other thing. There is a cause, and there is another effect. The Possibly Existent is the effect, and there is another thing that is the cause of its creations. Reasoning When we think about the relationship between existence and things, there are only these two cases, the Necessarily Existent and Possibly Existent. The mind can not imagine a third case. From now on the first one is addressed as NE and the second one as PE.
We point to an object near us, such as a book or a tree. We ask it, "Are you a NE or a PE?" If it answers, "I am NE", and if it is truth, then the problem is solved. It is God. But it is a PE, because we know that there is an external cause for its creation and it is not itself the creator. For example, one of the causes of the book is the writer, and one of the causes of the tree is the gardener.Next we point to the cause and ask it, "Are you a NE or a PE?" If it is NE, then the problem is solved, but it is PE too, and it needs an external cause for its creation. We continue backward. Any cause is an effect for its previous cause. We keep going backward continuing this string of causes and effects. Solution for creation In this stage there can be only three cases.
First Case When we are searching for causes, we encounter a NE that has no cause. It has no creator. It is its own creator. Therefore it is God. The dynamism of creation is not that God created a second cause after Himself a long time ago and the string of causes and effects began at that time, as Aristotle said. The real dynamism is that God is continually creating every second, every billionth of a second and He is supporting the existence and the laws of existence in each billionth of a second. These are laws such as cause and effect, and laws discovered in physics and other sciences, or as yet undiscovered. The proof of this dynamism would need another article. This is only a brief description. It is proved by "Sadr Ol Motealleheen Shirazi", Iranian philosopher of 16th century in his book, "Asfaar". Second Case The string of causes and effects is continued to infinity. This is concatenation. We go backward and we can not stop. The PEs have created an infinite series. Third Case We find a loop. We do not go backward on a line, but on a very big loop. We ask "A", "who has created you?" It points to its cause that stands before it, and so on, until we meet "A" again, as in figure 3, III. Or we can simplify the loop, as in figure 4.
If we prove that these two cases, concatenation and loop, are not truth, then the first case must be truth, because the mind cannot imagine any forth case for creation. It is not possible. Loop annulment Why
are the cases of concatenation and loop not truth? Because if they were,
and existence was based on them, then nothing would be created. Look at
figure 3, III (Loop). "A" can not exist because at first its
cause must be created. But the cause of "A" cannot exist for
the same reason. Each element of creation must wait for the creation of
its previous cause, and at last everything will refer to "A".
This means that "A" must create N, but this is not possible
for "A" because it does not exist. It is still waiting. "Nothing"
is not able to create "something". This is not logically possible.
So nothing must exist in existence, but "A" does exist. There
are innumerable things in existence. Therefore the dynamism of creation
cannot be the loop. The loop is not truth.
Concatenation annulment Please look at figure 3, II. In this case, when we ask "A", "Who has created you?" it points back. Then we ask "B", and it will point back. If we suppose that concatenation is truth, then this pointing back is continued to infinity, and infinity is not accessible. This line has no starting point. Therefore all existing things must be waiting, and because there is no start for creation, there can be nothing in existence. But we see that existence is existing. Therefore concatenation is not truth. Conclusion We have seen that there must be concatenation or loop or this string of creation must begin from somewhere. There is a Necessarily Existent at that point which Is created by itself. It doesn't need any cause. It is creating existence. It is the beginning. So our common sense has reached the conclusion that there must be a thing which is different from all other Possibly Existents, and it is Necessarily Existent. This one only Self-Existent thing is God. |
