Released in the summer of 1996, Sublime was the first, and ironically the last, of the band's albums to be recorded for major label MCA. Although Bradley died of a heroin overdose a little over two months before the album's sell date, it has since gone on to sell almost four million copies and win over a legoin of fans, almost none of whom knew about Bradley's death.
The album contained Sublime's most radio-friendly material to date, which may put off Sublime's older (and presumably more wiser) listeners, and proved it by letting off a string of four hit singles, including the folk-on-speed What I Got, which is nothing less than a modern-day "All You Need is Love", and the soft-spoken Santeria, which sounds like nothing more or less than Jamacian funeral music.
The album was recorded at Willie Nelson's recording studios in Austin, TX for several months with Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers, who sent Bradley home from the recording sessions early, causing him to miss out on playing the now-famous guitar solo on What I Got (it was actually finished by Miguel).
After the album dropped and the accolades started rolling in, Sublime was propelled to "Next Big Thing" status, and was mentioned as the band who would overtake No Doubt in bringing skacore to the mainstream. Critics and music journalists were already looking ahead to Sublime's next release as the one to cement them as one of the largest bands of the 1990's. Ironically, it would never come.
