Depth of the Rain
A teen-aged
girl who has been called Shadow from modern human Earth gets pulled into
another world, and hurled into a quest she has no idea how to pursue.
She meets up with a brother and sister from the other world, a horse who
understands every word they say, and a very disturbed boy that may or may
not really be helping them to achieve their goal. Their destinies
are intertwined.

Shadow came crashing
into my consciousness as my dearest muse on a rainy, cold December night
in 1999. She was so striking in her story telling that I just had
to start writing. I have to admit that it was her fault I seriously
started writing in the first place.
My connection with Shadow
came about because of U2's Joshua Tree album, I believe. I
think you can see a lot of the different movements in the story, not to
mention the fact that song titles and lyrics are hidden within the actual
text itself. Obviously, that wasn't the only music to bring this
world to life; you'll notice a plethora of mostly 1980's pop littering
the landscapes if you look hard enough. Hey, I'm not the least bit
embarrassed. Guns N' Roses can kick anyone's ass... if Axl would,
y'know, stop inflating that extra stretchy ego. But that's Shadow's
point to make, so I'll let her do it.
I'd also say that I can
trace quite a bit of the story element to video games. Yeah, I'm
a game nut, go figure. The Legend
of Zelda series tends to be a major influence on me, period. Ocarina
of Time quite frankly changed the way I could relate to video games.
Then there's quite a lesser know PC title from LucasArts called LOOM;
a coming of age story for a young weaver boy gone to find where the swans
have gone to. Sure it's not action packed, but it is a gorgeous and
bittersweet adventure across landscapes, ideals and the universe.
I still have my version, so there.
There's also a lot of Stephen
King's Dark Tower Series involved, but then, like The Legend of
Zelda, that inspired a hell of a lot through all of my works. Let's
just say I can relate to Roland; but, more than that, the tale of all intertwining
worlds is appealing.
As of the time of this writing/editing
session (January 25, 2004), Depth of the Rain is undergoing a major
edit in terms of (hopefully) most of the mistakes I missed the first time
around. Not to worry, none of the feel or the actual content is going
to change, period. The story itself is completed--but you
can be assured that the legend is not over yet. I have gained a great
deal of absolutely magnificent and all too kind readers, and I thank each
and every one of you for your time.
Other "Extras"
"Adrian at Peace", done on plain sketch paper with ink, colored pencils
and crayons. This isn't actually during Depth of the Rain,
but during a... later adventure. You'll just have to wait and see.
"There She Is", an acrylic painting on canvas. Sort of an in the
moment type thing, representing the story of the Pin Princess. The
land that touches the poisoned water is dead, feeling her pain...
