FLORIDA ADOPTION SEARCHES
11/09/72

My name is Joy Thompson I am searching for my birth parents and any siblings or family members. I was born November 9th, 1972 in Fort Walton Beach, FL. I do not know the hospital. I was born at 11:28PM and weighed 8pounds and 15 ounces, I was 21 inches long. My b-mother was 25 at the time of my birth. She was born in England and raised in a Catholic orphanage till she was 16. At 17 she met and married a man from the US that was 10 yrs older than her. They moved from England back to the US. They had a daughter that was 5 yrs old at the time of my birth. They later divorced ( before I was born!) and while my b-mother was hospitalized for a couple of weeks her ex-husband had temporary custody of their daughter. He then filed for permanent custody, which was easily obtained because he had remarried. She also had another daughter that was 17 months old at the time of my birth. My b-mother was described as five feet, two inches tall and weighed about 115 pounds. She had auburn hair, hazel eyes, and a medium build. She was of the Roman Catholic faith. She had been employed as a cashier, waitress, and a housekeeper. My b-mother described my b-father as 32yrs old at the time of my birth. He was born near the United States Capital. He was about six feet and two inches tall, with black hair, and brown eyes. He had a dark complexion. His father was a physician and his mother was a nurse. My b-mother stated that she believed that my b-father's parents were from Spain and that he was the first generation of his family born in America. His parents lived near the United States Capital. They met, dated, and eventually he was assigned to a permanent duty station overseas. She states that he was a junior grade helicopter pilot in the NAVY. Before he had to leave to go overseas he was to spend two or three months in a very small New England state. He invited her and her daughter to go with him ( the daughter that was 17mths old at the time of my birth) . They lived in an apartment together. She stated that she did not plan to get pregnant. When my birth father went overseas, my b-mother and her daughter returned to the south. She never told him about her pregnancy. She signed a consent to adopt on 11-10-72 and again on 12-20-72. She had to remain in the hospital a few days longer than planned, because she developed thrombosis of the legs. An article was placed in the local newspaper ( could have been the Okaloosa Playground Daily News or Pensacola News Journal) to try and locate my b-father for him to sign consent to adopt. He was listed as Juan Valdez of 619 Massachusetts Ave. Washington DC. I was placed with my adoptive parents in June of 1973. My adoption was finalized in the First Circuit Court of Santa Rosa County on November 27,1973. The judge was Woodrow M. Melvin. My adoptive parents lawyer was George Lowery. The case number was 73-C-532. The # from my ammended birth certificate are 109-72-104639. My adoptive parents were Ralph David Madden and Barbara Sue Brown Madden of 407 Walnut Street Milton Fl. This is all the information provided to me by the Dept. of HRS. I assume because I was listed as " Baby Williams" that my b-mother's name at the time of my birth was the same as mine. I would like to find any ties to b-parents, siblings, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated. I have waited 26 years to have all the pieces of my life put together. You never feel completely whole when you are adopted, but I feel as though if I just had answers and an opportunity to stare into the face of my makers I could begin again.
