Scene 1:
"Where is Nicky?" Tyler demanded as soon as he saw Diego in the courtroom.
Diego glanced up from his legal pad and frowned. "He said he was going to
be here," her added. "And I don't see him anywhere."
"He's here," Diego muttered. "Look, sit down already and shut up for a
minute."
Tyler held out his cuffed wrists to his guard and waited while he was
released. He rubbed his wrists where the cuffs had cut into his skin.
"That guard right there," he noted as the man stepped away, "really
doesn't like me."
"I don't think it's his job to like you, Tomas."
"For the last time, would you please call me Tyler? I really hate that
name," Tyler responded darkly.
"Why? Your parents gave you that name and I for one think it suits you."
Tyler say down heavily, a shadow passing over his features. "Well, my
father is dead and my mother is crazy. I don't think they'll care too much
that I've tried to distance myself from my brother. Considering he's half
the reason they're gone."
"What in the hell are you talking about? Your father had a heart attack
and your mother...well, that is no one's fault," Diego argued.
"What do you know about us, Diego? My father had a heart attack because
Nicky knocked up a girl and she tried to pass it off as Rey's. You
remember Rey? The brother that Nicky had murdered? He was my mother's
favorite so it's no surprise she ended up the way she did."
"Wait just a minute. You know you can hate Nicolas if you want, but don't
you ever accuse him of murder," Diego warned. "He had nothing to do with
your brother's death. And you know, for someone you claim to hate so much,
you certainly are letting him help you out of a big jam here."
"Hey, where have you been? I'm here because someone wants to hurt him,"
Tyler pointed out. "He should do everything he can to get me out of this
mess."
"Trust me, he is," Diego answered shifting his attention back to the notes
in front of him. "Now, if you are done, I'd like to go over a few things
with you before the judge comes in. Pay attention." Tyler nodded seriously
and leaned closer to Diego. "First of all, this name thing is going to be
an issue. Legally, you are Tomas Tejera. But for the last year you've been
going by the name Tyler Jones. You even have a driver's license with the
Jones name on it. You need to be honest with him about wanting to separate
yourself from your life. I'll spin it that you were depressed about your
father's death and your mother's decline. And that Rey's disappearance was
the last straw. I'll say that you had no direction and wanted to start
life over with a new name. You cannot say anything about how Nicolas'
business affected your decision. Do you understand?"
"Sure. I plan to make it legal after this is over anyway," Tyler shrugged.
Diego sighed but made no comment on Tyler's plan. "Second, this is just a
hearing to see if there is enough evidence for trial. You will not be
testifying. However, there will be a few witnesses. Detective Hamilton,
Dinah Stafford, Agent Stephens to name a few."
"Who's that?"
"The FBI agent in charge of the kidnapping investigation. He's the one we
have to be concerned with. Dinah will help you as much as she can.
Detective Hamilton will help and hurt. She'll be honest. Melissa Cravens
statement will be taken into account. But since she is dead, they won't
hear from her which could help. They will however hear from her father. I
plan on bringing Nicolas in to testify that Melissa recanted to him. Which
is why he is not in the room right now. All of the witnesses are in a
holding room right now."
The District Attorney entered the room followed by an assistant. Diego
nodded to him and lowered his voice. "This is a closed hearing as well.
There is a swarm of media outside and the DA is looking to make a move
upward in city politics so he'll be out for blood. Whatever you do, do not
show emotion. No matter what. Are we clear?"
"Yeah. We're clear," Tyler replied as the bailiff reentered the room from
the judges chambers.
"All rise."
Tyler and Diego got to their feet simultaneously. "Here we go," Diego
muttered under his breath.
Scene 2
The holding room in the courthouse was stuffy and too warm. Dinah pulled
her hair back into a pony tail, tucking stray locks behind her ear. She
sat in the corner, silently, avoiding eye contact with the other people
who had been called in to testify. Nicolas Tejera sat alone by himself
reading a letter; Detective Hamilton sat chatting amiably with the FBI man
who was there the night her father died. There were a couple of other
girls, none that she knew, and a man staring at the ground. The room was
silent except for the hushed tones of Detective Hamilton.
She left her chair and found one closer to Nicolas, settling down as best
as she could. She was nervous and afraid she would say the wrong thing.
What if the DA twisted her words? That had been known to happen. She
caught Nicolas' eye and smiled tentatively. He returned her smile with a
quizzical half smile, lowering his letter.
"You look worried," he said in a casual tone, though his voice was
lowered.
"Aren't you?" Dinah returned at the same level. She glanced over her
shoulder at Detective Hamilton. "The rest of Tyler's life depends on what
the people in this room say. I don't..." She trailed off, her eyes
drifting to the floor. "What if I say the wrong thing? What if my
testimony sends him to prison?" She asked voicing the worries that had
pressed on her all week.
Nicolas folded his letter carefully and placed it in his breast pocket.
"Dinah," he began leaning closer. "He isn't going to jail. You honestly
don't think I would allow that would you?"
"How could you stop it?"
"Sometimes one has to step outside the law to help family. I've done it
before and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again," he replied casually.
Dinah's eyes widened. She knew that Nicolas had a blatant disregard for
the law, but she had never heard him talk about breaking it before. "Don't
look so surprised. Surely, my brother has filled you in on my...career."
"Kind of," Dinah answered lowering her voice. "I thought he was
exaggerating at first. But when you showed up in New Orleans-"
"Make a good first impression, don't I?" He smiled pleasantly. "You know
though even if my brother only told you a little bit about it. I do have
connections. Good ones at that who can get him off."
"How? I mean, if he's found guilty what could you possibly do?"
Nicolas didn't answer right away. His eyes were fixed on Detective
Hamilton as she talked to the FBI agent. Dinah glanced that way herself
catching the look that passed between Nicolas and Toni, half wondering
what was going on between them. When he did answer, he looked at Dinah
deadly serious.
"I'll tell you what I won't do," he said in a low growl. "I won't let them
lock my kid brother up for something he didn't do. As for what I will
do... Whatever it takes," he added with a glance at Toni. "Whatever it
takes."
Scene 3
Angelina killed the SL500's engine and stared at the courthouse looming
before them. She dropped the keys in her purse and checked her face in the
rearview mirror. She hadn't dared put the Mercedes' top down for fear she
and Crista would show up looking wild, and this was an important day.
Her hair was straight, her make-up subtle. The cream color of her sheath
dress was simple and understated, but pretty. She looked like the type of
woman who'd own a car like this. It didn't matter that the car cost more
than she made in a year. It had been a parting gift from a dear friend in
New Orleans.
Sliding out from behind the wheel, Angelina reached into the back seat and
withdrew the knee-length trench-style coat that went with the dress. She
slipped it on, glad to have something to ward off the chill in the air.
Eyeing her sister, Angelina set the car's alarm and stepped around the
front as they began walking across the parking lot. "You were pretty quiet
on the way over," she noted conversationally.
Crista shrugged. "I didn't have anything to say," she told her big sister.
She was at her brother's rape trial. Or was it kidnapping? "So, what is
Nicky going to pull this time?"
Angelina arched a brow, but didn't comment on Crista's suspicions.
Honestly, she was wondering the same thing. "Tomas needs us here. He needs
our support. Nicky won't ruin that for him."
"I'm here for Tomas. Despite the fact that he disappeared from our lives
for how many years?" she asked, the bitterness evident in her voice.
Crista shivered a bit as the cool breeze bit through her. She kept
replaying everything in her mind. Her arrival in Virginia, the stories
that Lina and Nicky told her about what their family was doing there.
Nothing made any sense to her. "I actually believe that Tomas didn't do
it."
"Of course he didn't. He just...got involved with the wrong girl." The
wrong girl whose father was quite possibly involved with a very dangerous
man. A very dangerous man who had it in for their family, it seemed.
The girls' heels clicked against the pavement of the parking lot as they
neared the entrance to the courthouse. "You know, it's funny how much
people change. He used to scold me for my behavior when I was in high
school. 'As your big brother, who actually knows how to control himself,
you should listen to what I say.' Of course, I never did. He wasn't that
much older than me. It was like if Nicky or Rey would have said anything.
Not that I would have listened to them anyway," Crista said with a dry
laugh.
Angelina frowned as she thought about her sister's words. Did people
really change, or did it just seem that way when you found out all the
dirty secrets that they'd tried to hide? Of course, that was a rather
cynical way of thinking. "Try not to think of it that way," she said as
she opened the door for Crista. "He hasn't changed so much. Okay, so he's
calling himself Tyler Jones these days, but he can't be so different. He's
still Tomas inside, whether he wants to admit it or not. And Tomas Tejera
would never hurt anyone. He got in over his head," she murmured, not just
talking about their brother anymore.
Crista looked up at her sister with wide, sad eyes. "Tomas Tejera never
used to get in over his head. Everyone grows up, though. I guess it was
just his turn." The sisters entered the courthouse and went through the
metal detectors without saying a word. Only when they reclaimed their
bags, did Crista speak again. "So, do you think you and Nicky will ever
clue me in on everything?"
It was Angelina's turn to look at her sister with wide eyes. But she
quickly turned away, as if to search for Nicky or Dinah or Diego or…any
other distraction. "What everything? You know just as much as I do about
this thing with Tomas. He couldn't have done it. And that's all the
matters...I hope." There wasn't anyone left to give testimony that Tomas
was guilty. But she didn't know if that was a blessing or a curse.
Crista looked down and shook her head. "I'm not just talking about Tomas,
and you know that. I've had this talk with you before and I've had it with
Nicky. If this isn't the time to include me, fine. But I'm still the same
selfish child I've always been. I want to be able to live my life and
right now, none of us have any opportunity to do that."
"In his own way, Nicky's trying to give you that opportunity." She didn't
know why she was defending their brother. She'd seen firsthand what
trusting him could do. She'd suffered because of it, too. "Look, what's
done is done. And no matter how much we don't like it, we have to be here
right now. Okay?" Angelina reached out and smoothed her sister's hair back
from her face. All she wanted to do was protect her family - with or
without Nicky's help. "We've already lost enough members of this family.
Is it really so bad to be near the rest of us again?" she teased
halfheartedly.
Crista forced a smile for her sister. "I'm pretty tough on the outside. If
Diego hadn't drugged me, he would have been asking for his mother by the
time I was done beating him up," she laughed lightly. Laughing lightly
over being drugged? That had to show that she was dealing all right with
being in Virginia. "If you need a bodyguard who doesn't know all the dirt,
I'm here. What are sisters for?"
"I have no doubt you could have taken Diego. In fact, I'd like to see that
one day. But for now, let's just find Tomas and give him our show of
solidarity. And I promise...you'll be my first choice as a bodyguard, if I
ever need one. For the record, I say that with the utter certainty that I
never will." The scar on her hip burned, but she knew it was just her
guilty conscience making itself known.
Diego stepped into the hall to their left and she turned to point him out
to Crista, only to spot Nicky exiting the building from a side door. "Why
don't you go see if he has any news about the trial," Angelina suggested,
nodding in Diego's direction. "I think I saw Nicky go that way and I-."
She caught herself before saying too much. "Maybe he's seen Dinah. She's
been really good for Tomas."
Crista rolled her eyes at Lina and said, "You really hate me if you want
me to deal with him," but she didn't argue. "You know that I'm going to
nag you to tell me whatever else you know. And that I know better to make
a scene in a courtroom." She made her way over to Diego, and even
attempted to hide her contempt for him. There was a time and a place. Her
brother's trial was not that time and place.
Scene 4
Toni returned to the holding room followed by the bailiff who paused in
the doorway and called Dinah's name. She gave Dinah a helpful pat on the
shoulder as Dinah passed. Toni's testimony had been relatively easy but
Dinah was in for a world of trouble. Agent Stephens stood when she entered
and offered his hand to her. Taking it, she smiled pleasantly.
"It was nice to see you again, Agent Stephens," she said quickly catching
Nicolas Tejera's eye over the agent's shoulder. "But I have to get back to
work."
Without waiting for his response, she turned on her heel and left the
holding room, digging through her purse for her keys. Footsteps echoed
behind her in the hall of the courthouse and she turned catching sight of
Nicolas strolling casually towards her. What did he think he was doing? He
nodded to her and stepped to a side exit. Berating herself silently, Toni
looked around to see if anyone was watching before following him outside.
It wouldn't look right if they were caught together today of all days.
Nicolas was leaning against the building, a cigarette caught between his
lips and a cell phone to his ear. He held up his hand to her in greeting.
"Just checking messages," he said flipping the phone closed. "How did it
go in there?"
"You know we aren't supposed to talk about it, Nicolas," she chastised
him. "In fact, this conversation shouldn't be happening either. Do you
know what the DA would do if he saw us chatting out here?"
"The District Attorney does not impress me as the type of man I would
consider intelligent," Nicolas remarked with a smile. "If he found out we
were talking, I'm not certain he would put two and two together."
"You shouldn't underestimate him, Nicolas."
"And you shouldn't underestimate me, Antonia," Nicolas echoed. "Just tell
me how your testimony went and I'll let you go."
"It was fine. I don't think I did any damage at any rate," she admitted
softly. "I just hope the judge sees how thin the DA's case is. If he
doesn't...well, I don't want to think about it."
Nicolas gave her a knowing glance but only shook his head. "It stops here.
I've already seen to it."
Toni's eyes widened in shock. Did he just say what she thought he did? She
knew he had money and was fairly powerful in Florida but not in Virginia.
He couldn't have bought off the judge! It just wasn't possible. She opened
her mouth to say so but snapped it shut again. For some reason, she knew
he had done it. There was no reason not to doubt it. Considering what he
did for a living, she should have expected this long ago.
"How could you..." She trailed off not sure she wanted to voice it at all.
"I cannot let my brother go to prison no more than you can watch an
innocent man go on trial for something he didn't do. I know you believe
he's innocent. Otherwise, you wouldn't be standing here right now and you
certainly wouldn't have helped me when I asked for it. I'm only doing what
it takes to keep him safe."
"Are you out of your mind?" Toni demanded collecting herself. "Do you know
how many laws you just broke?"
"I can see you're torn between arresting me and kissing me," Nicolas
commented with another all too charming smile. He stubbed out the
cigarette and stepped closer to her. "Personally, I hate jails so why not
just kiss me and end the debate."
Toni's eyes widened in surprise and she could have sworn she saw him lean
into her waiting for a kiss. She thought for a moment that he would kiss
her regardless of whether she wanted him to or not but she couldn't let
him do that. She had promised herself that a man would never have that
kind of pull on her again and Nicolas Tejera was no exception.
Toni smiled back sweetly, laying her hands on his chest. "Not in a million
years, Mr. Tejera," she said sweetly pushing him back out of her personal
space.
Scene 5
Dinah stepped out of the courtroom into the hallway, relieved to be away
from probing questions and accusing eyes. Tyler wouldn't meet her eyes
while she was testifying but she could see worry lines etched around his
eyes and mouth. With luck, she didn't do as much damage as she had feared.
She didn't lie, but she certainly didn't tell the whole truth. Nicolas had
instructed her not to mention that she had gone with Tyler to New Orleans
of her own free will. When she had asked why, he had made a few facts
quite plain.
"Do you want to go to prison for aiding and abetting?" He had asked
coldly. "Because you surely will and I don't think you want to do that.
Nor does Tyler want you to do that."
Dinah did not want to go to jail anymore than she wanted Tyler to go to
jail. So, the testimony she gave was close to the truth. But it wasn't the
truth. The truth of it was, she had helped Tyler even after she had been
warned not to and the result was the death of her father. She hadn't
pulled the trigger but she might as well have in the eyes of the
community.
"Dinah!"
Lost in her thoughts, she almost missed Noah waving to her from the
courthouse entrance. She waved back, trying to smile despite her concern.
"Hi, Noah. What are you doing here?" She asked approaching her.
"Supporting two friends," Noah replied giving her a warm embrace. "Do you
really think I would let you go through this on your own?"
"No, I don't. You're a good friend, Noah," she answered pulling away. "I'm
sure Tyler appreciates it too."
"How'd it go in there?"
Dinah shrugged. "I don't know. Okay, I guess. I mean, the District
Attorney didn't ask a whole lot of questions and the ones he did ask were
shot down by the judge. So...well, I don't know. I just felt like it was
all for show. Does that make sense?"
"Yeah, a little. Did you get the feeling that they were going to go to
trial?"
She thought about that one for a moment. "Now that you ask...no. In fact,
it almost seemed like the whole thing was already decided in Tyler's
favor. Why do you think that is?"
"I don't know," Noah shrugged. "Maybe the DA knows he doesn't have a case
without a victim. Law's not really my area of expertise."
"I'm not an expert either. I'll talk to Diego later." She looked around
the hallway with a slight frown. "Where's Piper? In the bathroom or
something?"
Noah's face clouded. "She didn't want to come," he said too quickly.
"That doesn't sound like Piper. Is she all right?"
"She's fine. I don't want to talk about her. Look, do you want to go
somewhere and get something to eat? My treat?" He asked ducking her
question about Piper.
Dinah frowned and shook her head. Six months ago, she would have given her
soul to be with Noah. But now, she had to wait and see the day out with
Tyler. "Thanks, Noah. But I should stay here. I mean, you never know what
will happen. Maybe something good." Noah's face fell slightly. Just what
was going on between Noah and Piper, Dinah wondered. "Why don't you hang
here with me? I could use the company," she offered instead.
"That would actually be...well, great. Thanks Dinah. But I am starving.
Would you mind if I went and grabbed a sandwich?"
"No, just bring me back a Diet Coke, okay?" She stood on tiptoes and gave
him another hug, grateful to have his friendship once again.
Scene 6
Nicolas watched clouds scudding across the sky, inhaling deeply on his
cigarette. There was a definite chill in the air; autumn was on the way.
Shivering slightly at the thought of a Virginia winter, he pulled his suit
coat close and stubbed out the cigarette. He pulled a fresh cigarette from
the pack and lit it. He always chain smoked when he was thinking things
through. It was how he kept his head clear.
The door opened behind him and Angelina stepped outside, looking pretty
and professional in a cream colored dress. Worry lines were etched into
her forehead, creasing her otherwise beautiful face.
"Cheer up, little sister," Nicky remarked casually. "Nothing can be that
bad."
"Nothing? Have you even stopped to look around lately, Nicky?" She
wrinkled her nose at the smoke he blew downwind and her gaze dropped to
the evidence of his addiction littered at his feet. "I'm worried about
Tomas," Angelina admitted. "I'm worried about all of us."
"I wouldn't worry about Tomas. His situation has been taken care of,"
Nicky said looking away from Angelina. He didn't need to see her to know
that she was giving him 'the look.' She'd perfected that long ago when
they were kids. It was a scathing 'I know you've done something so just
tell me' look. Nicolas hated seeing it.
"Taken care of...how?" Angelina asked cautiously. "Nicky, please, tell me
you haven't done anything that could get him in more trouble. You
didn't...." She bit her lip. The girl who'd accused Tomas...Tyler...was
dead. Nicky had claimed ignorance, but could he have...? At one time, the
doubt never would have entered her mind. But these days...one never knew.
"It's taken care of," Nicolas repeated. "And no, it will not affect Tyler.
If you must know..." He lowered his voice and glanced around to make sure
they were truly alone. "The case will be thrown out tomorrow. The judge
will hear testimony until mid-afternoon and decide that there is not
enough evidence to continue."
She wasn't sure she wanted to know the details, so she didn't ask. "You
shouldn't have brought them here," Angelina said, folding her arms over
her chest as she looked away, a cool wind causing her hair to whip around
her face. "How much more do we have to suffer? Losing Papa and Rey, not to
mention the fact that we haven't seen Isabel in years. Now our little
brother's in jail accused of rape. Even if there's no case, it doesn't
undo the damage that's already been done. Crista is miserable here and
Mama...." There wasn't a day that passed that she didn't worry about their
mother's health. "If Creighton really is involved in any of this, there
has to be a reason, Nicky. Is there something you need to tell me?"
"Do you think I would do something so foolish like double cross Jack
Creighton?" Nicolas asked darkly. "Maybe you remember how he ordered my
death a couple of years ago? But by the grace of god, I survived. Besides,
I evened up with Creighton and Lewis. I gave them what they wanted which
was control of Florida. True, I wouldn't give them Esperanza," he added
mentioning the family shipping business. "Or access to the marina but with
the money they were making shipping their...product from South America,
they didn't need it. Unless..." He paused as a sudden thought came to him.
"Unless he does need it. Maybe this harassment is just his way of
reintroducing himself to me."
"Reintroducing himself to you," Angelina echoed. "Is this really the way
you people talk in your line of...business? You're worried too, so don't
try to hide it. If you weren't, you wouldn't have had Diego drag Crista
and Mama away from the life they've always known."
Of course, if Jack Creighton was anywhere near this trouble with Tyler,
there was need to worry. She remembered in detail how badly Nicky had been
beaten. Part of her had doubted he'd make it. And then there had been all
the trouble with his recuperation.
She'd hated him. Sometimes, she still did. Nicky was her brother and she
had to love him, but she didn't have to love what he'd single-handedly
done to their family. But at least he seemed to be trying to do the right
thing this time.
Unfortunately, not everything was so easily forgiven. Some things had been
sacrificed to the past, and even though she couldn't change the things
that had happened - or hadn't happened - those personal losses were still
tinged with a bitterness Angelina couldn't forget.
She made a good point. She always did and that was the annoying thing
about Angelina. No matter the situation, she was always the devil's
advocate showing him just how faulty his own judgment usually was. Of
course he was worried. There was someone out to get him, whether it was
Creighton or someone else, someone was trying to get to him through his
family. Still, there was something missing. Creighton never cared about
his family one way or the other.
That wasn't entirely true. He had shown interest in Angelina once upon a
time. Thankfully that had ended with the death of Creighton's partner,
Larry Lewis. Creighton's attention had turned to Lewis' daughter and
Angelina was quickly forgotten. Until now it seemed. Not only was Angelina
a target but so was Crista and Isabel wherever she was at the moment.
"I admit it, alright? I am worried," Nicolas admitted. "But I did the
right thing bringing Crista and Mama here. And now that you're here and
Tomas' situation is about to correct itself, I can concentrate on keeping
us safe while I get out of this mess."
"Do we know exactly what this mess is?" Yes, she'd deliberately included
herself in the equation. "And before you clam up and give me the old 'it's
better if you don't know' spiel, let me just remind you how I found out
all the dirty little secrets last time. I'd rather not go through that
again. So let me help you, Nicky. I'm here. And unless you've come clean
to everyone since the last time we spoke, I know the most about what we're
possibly dealing with." Although she was sure she didn't know all of it -
not by a long shot. But she was willing to give him the benefit of the
doubt...this time. "That makes me your only real ally in this, because the
last thing I want is for something to happen to our family. Don't cut me
out of the loop now, Nicky. You can't handle this all on your own."
Of course she was right. Angelina was surprisingly insightful and
calculating. She could and would help regardless of any argument from him.
But just how much of the truth could he trust her with?
"Fine. I'll tell you what I can. For obvious reasons, there are things I
can't tell you. A year ago, Rey and I were fighting over who would run
Esperanza. You remember that?" He asked alluding to their brother who had
gone missing. "Business was good and I had ideas for that marina. But Rey
only wanted to run excursions. He didn't want to make money by letting
import ships dock there. And before you say it, nothing illegal. I like to
give the impression I'm criminal, Angelina. That doesn't make me one." He
waved the thought off, lighting another cigarette before continuing. "Rey
disappeared with that girl and Esperanza fell into my hands. About that
time, Creighton shows up again. He wants to work together again.
Especially since his partner was gone, he needed a new one. Apparently,
the man can't work alone. He brought this outrageous plan to expand the
marina and use Esperanza as a cover for his activities. I turned him
down."
Angelina nodded as she listened, though she was momentarily overwhelmed
with a feeling of sadness for their other brother. "So you turned him down
and that was it? Sounds rather easy for a man like Jack Creighton."
"Of course that wasn't it," Nicolas hissed sharply. "He threatened and
bullied me for a while. But in the end, I was able to give him something
else that he wanted. And he left me alone."
Nicolas turned away from Angelina not wanting to continue. That should be
enough for her anyway. No one need know what he had done to satisfy
Creighton. Least of all his judgmental siblings.
"Until now. Possibly." She tucked her hair behind her ears and glanced
over her shoulder towards the building. Nicky seemed to have decided he'd
done enough sharing for the day. Well, at least it was a start.
"So what do we do now? Wait until whoever's behind all of this shows his
face?"
Nicky faced Angelina again with a fierce look in his eye. "I don't intend
to sit back and continue to allow Creighton or whoever this is to mess
with me or any of you. But there aren't many people I can trust right now.
I thought I could trust Garcia and all he did was make things worse. I
trust you, though I am sure the feeling is not mutual. There's someone
else who can help too. But tracking him down will be a little difficult.
So for now, we continue to watch our backs and look into the little things
a little more. Unless you have a better idea?"
Angelina tried not to let him spark her temper. It was a stressful
situation for everyone, and besides - he was right. She didn't trust him.
Not completely. After all, he certainly hadn't given her full disclosure,
had he?
"If you're right and the girl's father is involved with Creighton, there's
got to be a reason why," she thought aloud. "Though I don't suppose he
would talk. Unless...well...his daughter is dead. Most likely because of
this mess. What could Creighton - or anyone, really - be holding over
Cravens' head that would number one, push him to accuse Tyler, and number
two, keep him from looking too closely into his own daughter's death?
Speaking of, what ever happened to that detective - the woman?" The
current running between her brother and the detective had been palpable.
Angelina didn't know what had transpired between them before she arrived
in Virginia, and she wasn't sure she wanted the details. But the woman had
seemed to really listen to Nicky instead of simply blowing him off and
carting him in on a murder charge. Perhaps she could be of help, if she
could be counted among the trusted few.
"Detective Hamilton cannot be involved in any investigating," he said
firmly. The last thing he wanted to do was damage Toni's career in any
way. "Neither should you but I don't think I can talk you out of it. As
for Cravens...perhaps he would be more likely to talk to us now that his
daughter is dead. Though, I don't think it should be me that talks to
him." He eyed Angelina. "What do you say? Up for it?"
