Episode 153

Scene 1:

"And introducing the 2003-2004 Junior Varsity cheerleaders! Your JV captain, Hannah Bruce, Emily McCormick..."

"I have detention for a week."

Macy looked up as her good friend Corey Baird sat down in the seat next to her. She laughed, "what did you do?"

"The VP caught me trying to sneak off campus to avoid this damn thing," he replied.

Catherine strolled by with Darcy, the two noticed Macy and gave her a brief acknowledgment. Macy watched all the eyes in the gym follow the duo to where they sat. Other students filtered in through the gym doors, eager to get out of class for the pep rally. Macy waved at another one of her few friends Sadie Chavez who was on the gym floor, taking pictures for journalism.

"And now the varsity football team," the principal called, reading off names, "Chris Mason." The only name Macy acknowledged was that one.

"His Dad probably paid for him to get that," Corey laughed.

"Nah, Chris isn't like that," Macy defended.

"And you know the guy?" Corey asked. Macy shot him a look. "Well, he is fairly good-looking, if you like that blonde-haired, blue-eyed pretty boy type, but I always assumed you to be a more Johnny Depp kinda girl..."

"Corey, just because I defended Chris doesn't mean I like him. He's a friend of the families, he's been my sister's on-again-off-again boyfriend since we were like six," Macy replied coolly.

"There's a huge party this weekend at Dylan Guthrie's house. I know parties aren't your thing..."

"Ah, but parties are your thing, Core," Macy interrupted.

"You know how much I love a good party. It's about all I did this summer. And I think you should be my date. Besides Dylan's sister is Tabby Guthrie, and she knows a lot of guys and girls from the local prep school..."

"Whatever, the only reason you want to go is to check out rich boys," Macy laughed.

"I hear that cool local band Gumshoe will be playing," Jason lured. He saw some interest in Macy's often placid face. "Please, Macy, I'm begging you. Sadie said she would go. She's going to bring her camera. You know how she is. She can find artistic expression in any situation-"

"Welcome back students and incoming freshmen," the principal's voice boomed.

"Fine, I'll go," Macy agreed. She knew with Corey and Sadie, it couldn't be boring. "But you owe me."

Corey smiled. "Of course. I'll take you to the symphony or something."

"Deal," Macy agreed.

"This year-" Macy slipped her headphones on and turned her music up to drown out the surrounding chaos. A string quartet filled her ears as it dramatically played Tool's schism. Music, nothing meant more to her.

Scene 2:

"It's your job to get the alcohol," Dylan Guthrie remarked to his sister, who was stretched out on the couch, talking on the phone.

Tabby rolled her eyes at her brother and gestured at him to be quiet. "I'm on the phone," she mouthed.

"What else is new?" Dylan mumbled and slumped into the a seat across from her.

"Yeah, we're having a little celebration since Dylan made varsity football....hahaha, I know right....well, the parentals are in Canada this whole weekend....yeah...house is all ours...okay, see ya Saturday, later." Tabitha stretched her long tan legs and rose to her feet.

"Are you going to get the alcohol?" he demanded.

"Jeez, yes, you get the music and I will get the drinks," she replied as she examined her nails. "I need to have my nails filled..."

"Tabby, my reputation rests on the success of this party," Dylan snapped.

Tabitha laughed, "chill Dylan, I've been playing hostess since I entered high school. No party sucks when I'm involved."

Scene 3:

Macy stopped dead in her tracks when she entered the McCormick kitchen. A crowd of Emily's friends surrounded the kitchen table. She noted Chris Mason, Jason Rose, Hannah Bruce, and a few other faces that were less distinguishable among the popular crowd. Macy raised a skeptical eyebrow as they all turned to look at her. She ignored their stares and brushed past them.

"Could you please turn down whatever you're listening to?" Emily asked.

"Tool?" Macy replied innocently.

"Yes, that, could you turn it down?"

Macy replied with a shrug.

"Em, Chris are you two going to go to Dylan's party?" someone asked.

"Dylan Guthrie's party?" Chris muttered. "I'd rather be in hell."

"I dunno-" Emily began, interrupting him.

"Oh, why not?" Macy chastised. "I mean, a party like this could make or break all our reputations, you know, depending on how much alcohol you can consume-"

"How do you know about Dylan's party?" one of the girls asked.

What was her name? Macy wondered. Ah, yes, Jessica. Of all of Em's lowly peons, Macy disliked this one the most. She defined narrow-minded and snobby.

"Oh, I was invited," Macy replied, as though it were not absurd in the least. Everyone stared at her. This was playing out too perfectly. "Yes, me, Corey, and Sadie. You know that local rock band, Gumshoe, yeah they'll be there. I wouldn't miss it for the world." Macy smiled sweetly at the group as she poured herself a glass of orange juice.

"Well, Em, if your sister and her fag friend are going...I'm sure Darcy and Catherine will go, aren't they friends with Tabby, Dylan's sister?" Jessica began in a murmur.

Macy's face immediately darkened at what Jessica called Corey. Macy stepped around the countertop. "Yeah, Em, since me and my fag friend are going, and you left out that freaky camera girl, you know the one with the black, blue, and red hair?"

A look of horror came over Emily's face. Macy normally kept to herself, but apparently she was feeling unusually feisty. Emily knew that when this happened, it never ended well. Macy sat down across the table from Jessica and Emily just dropped her head. "And I think Darcy beat up Tabby in junior high, so they aren't very fond of each other, but you know Cat and Darce, they love to antagonize people, so they probably will go," Macy chatted with a facade of amicability. "You know this small talk you seem to so frequently indulge in really isn't so difficult. Hmmm, maybe I could join your ranks-" At that Emily buried her face in her hands. Macy was going to pull a Darcy, it was inevitable.

"Nah, just kidding, I just wanted to make some of your hearts beat a little faster," Macy laughed and stood up. She smiled down at Jessica and in one swift movement threw the contents of her glass in Jessica's face.

"MACY!" Emily screeched.

"And I would suggest that you never call Corey Baird a fag again. Okay? It's really so very politically incorrect." With that, Macy gave a charming smile to the group and exited the kitchen.

Scene 4:

Chris kicked at the pavement letting a stone skip off the toe of his shoe. Home was the last place he wanted to be but it was where he was expected. His father was home after his "business trip" to New Orleans. Whatever Jamie was doing in Louisiana, Chris could have cared less. Was he the only one who thought Jamie would be better off flying to Toronto to make amends with his wife? From the attitude of the other Masons, Chris decided, he was the only one.

"Hey, Chris! Wait up!" Chris turned at Jason's shout, lifting his chin in acknowledgement. "You want to hang at my house tonight?" Jason asked falling in step next to Chris.

"Can't. My dad's home," Chris muttered.

"About time," Jason replied. "I can't believe we didn't take advantage of his business trip and have our own party. If you threw a party, it would make Dylan Guthrie look like a complete asshole."

"Yeah right. Me throw a party," Chris snorted derisively. "My grandmother would have freaked out completely."

"If she'd known..."

"If she'd known? Jason, this is my grandmother we're talking about here. She knows everything." He paused at the intersection where a red light held them up for a moment. "Besides, the last thing I need right now is to flaunt my dad's money."

"Are you kidding? You throwing a party is exactly what you want to do."

"Why?"

"For one thing," Jason began as the light changed. "If you threw a party the same night as Dylan, no one would go to his. Everyone would come to yours. I mean, you are a Mason after all. And I know how much you hate it, but that means something to the kids in our school."

"Disgusting isn't it?"

"Depends on how you look at it," Jason shrugged. "You've got money, so you really can't do a lot wrong. Those kids at school...the ones without money, I mean...they'll worship you no matter what you do."

"That's twisted, man. And I don't believe a word of it. You know what they're all saying about me right now. They might worship my dad's money, but when it comes to me, they think I'm shit," Chris remarked pausing at another corner. "They think just because Dad has money, I get whatever I want...including a spot on the Varsity football team."

"Not everyone thinks that," Jason protested.

"Sure they do. You saw the way Hannah and Jessica treated me. Like I was cool but the minute my back was turned they were whispering about me. Everyone thinks I'm a fraud, Jason."

"Hey, you know I don't believe it," Jason said grabbing Chris' arm. "I'm not everyone either. I'm your friend. And your friends don't believe those lies Dylan Guthrie is spreading about you. Unless they're true..."

"They're not!" Chris snapped, his face turning red. "At least, if it's true, I don't know it," he added lowering his voice. He looked down the street towards his house where he could see Jamie's car in the driveway. His stomach lurched a little at the thought of seeing his father. He would have to ask Jamie to be sure one way or the other.

"I'm sure it isn't," Jason told him sympathetically. "Your dad might be a lot of things but from everything I've heard, he's pretty honorable. Not to mention that he used to be an athlete. He wouldn't buy you a spot on the football team."

"I hope you're right," Chris returned with a heavy sigh before forcing himself to finish the walk home.

On the next Episode of Secret Horizons...

"Welcome to Virginia, baby sister," Nicolas said with a satisfied smile. "You were quite troublesome for Diego. I almost had to pay him double his normal fee. But Diego is a good man. He didn't ask for anything extra. Though, I should imagine he wouldn't mind a thank you for not tying you up."
