Author’s note:
He quietly watched her working, keeping just outside of the door, knowing that if he stepped forward the slight creaking would give him away. He wasn’t sure how long he’d been there, long enough to get the attention of a few of the people that had walked past him more than once in that time.
He knew he had no reason to be there, she had already completed all the reports due, and Hammond hadn’t requested a sudden briefing. He needed to do something, either make his presence known or leave, but he didn’t want to disturb her and couldn’t bare to tear himself away.
He was surprised she hadn’t realised he was there, normally she had a sort of six sense for when people were watching her, but she had continued working away merrily. Either she was so absorbed in whatever it was she was doing that she had forgotten that a world existed outside or she knew he was there and wasn’t bothered.
He jumped as someone tapped him on the arm, turning his head to find Daniel stood behind him, a knowing look on his face.
"You do realise you’ve been here for an hour right?"
Jack raised an eyebrow. "Really?"
"Yep, I sent one of the scientists out for coffee an hour ago and they mentioned seeing you arrive here. When someone else mentioned it a few minutes ago I thought I’d better come see what was going on."
"I was thinking."
He grinned. "About what? Or should I say who?"
Jack glared at him, hating the guy for being so amused by the situation. "Don’t you dare laugh."
Daniel smirked, "I wouldn’t dream of it Jack. I'm just sure there are better places for you to think, or even do work."
"He's not a big distraction Daniel, it's the giggles from the people passing that is distracting."
They both turned to the owner of the voice, finding Sam staring intently at them.
"You knew he was here all along?"
Her eyes flicked to Jack before back to Daniel. "Of course. Although tell him that next time he's welcome to come in and sit down as long as he promises not to touch anything." She turned back to her work, leaving the two men open mouthed in surprise.
"I can't believe she knew you were here all that time."
"It's Carter Daniel, she knows everything."
He nodded. "Very true. I've heard rumours about her sending SF's to deal with nosy scientists that have been caught loitering outside her lab, you should consider yourself lucky."
Jack grinned. "I'm the luckiest guy on the planet."
