Author’s note: I ended the world again.

She walked down the road, the smoke hurting her throat, making her eyes water but she walked on, focused only on the house she knew was close, that she had to see, she had to know.

She could feel their eyes on her, knew that they were probably watching her, wondering how she survived, where she was going, and why she was crying.

She had already been to her house, and Janet’s, finding them both flattened, hers from a direct hit, Janet’s from one close.

She hadn’t seen anyone since she’d left the base, the few survivors there too traumatised to tell her what she needed to know.

Reaching the right road, she stopped, breathing hard, each breath more painful than the one before, the smoke damaging her already injured lungs.

She gently touched her side, wincing as she felt a stab of pain, barely noticing the fresh blood on her hand as she moved it away, her only thought on the house she could barely make out, and where its occupant was.

She fell just before reaching the house, her legs finally giving in, forcing her to crawl towards her destination, ignoring the smell of burning flesh that was stronger closer to the ground.

Reaching the house, she was amazed to find it still standing, almost undamaged, surrounded by destruction.

Pulling herself to her feet she slowly walked forward, her whole body complaining, begging her to stop, to surrender to the darkness that she could feel trying to capture her, drag her into it’s peaceful, pain free nothing.

Shaking her head, trying to clear it she instead wincied at the pain it caused, focusing her eye on the half open door, her determination forcing one foot in front of the other until she finally reached the door, her cracked hands reaching out to feel the cold wood, proof that the house still stood.

She pushed gently against the door, jumping slightly as it crashed to the ground, sending up a cloud of dust that blocked her sight and caused her to cough.

She tried to call out, finding her throat too dry, the only sound being made a hoarse cry.

Forcing herself into the closest room, she scanned it quickly, finding it empty, moving quickly to the next room, her body willing to co-operate now it knew the end was near, one way or another.

Reaching the bedroom, she gasped as she spotted him lying on the bed, covered in rubble, a hole in the ceiling letting in the murky glow from the polluted atmosphere.

Reaching him she collapsed next to the bed, leaning against the mattress, carefully moving her hand to stroke his cheek.

“Jack?” She whispered, breathing on his cheek, smiling when he moaned slightly, his eyes opening, head turning towards her.

“Sam?”

“Hey baby.”

“Was waiting, didn’t want to leave without seeing you.”

She kissed his cheek, a tear slipping down her face. “I’m here, I’m here.”

He moved his hand, clasping hers gently. “I love you.”

“I love you too Jack.”

She leaned forward, ignoring the extra pressure it placed on her damaged ribs, kissing him briefly on the lips.

“You can sleep now, I’m here.”

She watched as he closed his eyes, taking a few short breaths before his grip on her hand loosened, and she placed his hand gently next to his body, resting her head again his still warm chest, and closing her eyes welcomed the darkness.
