Author’s note: Just a little thing I wrote while on the plane home.

He had been so nervous, so concerned about seeing her again.

It had been years, too many years, since they had last seen each other. The angry words they had both spoken reverberated around his head, constant reminders that he wasn't there because of their old friendship.

He looked down at his hands, the shreds of train ticket slipping through his fingers. He couldn't remember ripping it up, could only guess that his hands had been trying to release the nervous energy his mind was creating.

He wanted to believe that they would just look at each other, share their private smile and everything would be all right, but he knew it never could be. He couldn't take back the words he had spoken anymore than she could. No matter how many times he said, "I'm sorry" she would never, could never, forgive him.

Taking a deep breath he walked up to the spot where she was waiting. He suddenly realised he should have brought flowers, some kind of gift for her. He knew she wouldn't have wanted them though, he wasn't too sure she was the sort of woman that liked flowers, a motorbike part however and she would have been beaming.

Rounding the corner he spotted it, the location exactly where it had been described on the instructions he had been sent.

It was a small piece of granite, same as every other one in the row. Her name was engraved on it, the black lettering standing out even in the rain.

He looked up as the sky opened, drop after drop of water raining down on him, his face appearing to stream with tears.

He knelt down before her grave, resting his hand over her name, picturing her smiling face in his mind.

"I'm sorry Sam. Sorry I was a stubborn old fool who couldn't tell you how I felt, sorry I never got in touch and most of all I'm sorry I let you go, let you leave me, go somewhere I couldn't protect you."

He sighed, feeling no better. He knew he should have gone to the funeral, met up with everyone rather than coming alone, a hand written note from Cassie telling him where she was.

He didn't see the figure hiding beneath the tree, a sad smile on their face. "She knew Jack, she knew," they whispered, the rain stealing the words before they reached him.
