She wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry, wanted to do both at the sight before her. It seemed so pointless, so insignificant yet was all that remained.
She could hear people shouting around her, calling to each other, making sure everyone was still ok. The blast had shocked them all, half of them had never seen a cargo ship before, let alone knew about the auto destruct.
It was meant to have been a simple mission, take some of the newer members of the SGC to see a real cargo ship they had found, apparently abandoned on an uninhabited planet, the original owners having left long ago. Or so they had believed.
They had been taking a break from lessons, spread out around the clearing that held the ship when the explosion had happened, everyone diving for cover as their classroom turned into a fireball.
Sam reached down into the soil, brushing it off the object as she picked it up, clutching it in her hand as she collapsed against a tree.
She was sat in the same position, staring blankly ahead an hour later when Daniel found her, Jack’s dog tags hanging from the chain around her fingers.
