Author’s note:Having a slight penguin obsession at the moment.
Sam hummed as she unlocked the door, trying to juggle the bags of shopping with the pile of reports she needed to work on.
Finally getting the door open she stumbled in, instantly picking up on the sound of snoring and the TV from her lounge.
Unpacking the shopping she considered calling to him for help but decided to leave him to sleep, for a little longer anyway, he’d been having a bad week so hadn’t been sleeping much.
Putting away the last box she picked up the cuddly toy she had received free with some new product that was on offer, she wasn’t quite sure what the product was but it looked like something resembling chocolate cake, so she had guessed Jack would like it.
Slipping silently into the room, she smiled at the image that greeted her eyes. Jack, spread out on the couch, a blanket haphazardly thrown over his legs, his face turned to face the TV which was showing a Simpson’s marathon.
She moved closer, kneeling next to him, placing the toy gently on his chest before moving to turn off the TV.
She froze as he screamed, turning in time to see him fall off the couch.
He jumped up, backing away from it quickly, glancing round the room until he spotted her.
"Sam? What the hell is that and why was it on my chest?"
She stared at him, confused, before moving to pick the toy up. "It’s a toy penguin Jack, I got it free with some food, thought you might like it." She cuddled it before holding it out to him.
He stepped back, quickly moving to the other side of the couch. "Keep that thing away from me."
She raised an eyebrow, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "You’re afraid of the penguin."
"Am not!"
She grinned, looking at down at the penguin. "It’s only a penguin."
"Yeah, but look at it. It’s all black and white and shouldn’t even be here. They should stay where they belong and not try to invade other countries."
"Invasion of the killer penguins? That sounds like a bad B movie. What’s so bad about them Jack?"
He looked down at the floor, blushing in embarrassment. "When I was young one of my friends told me that a penguin killed another of his friend’s dog. I’ve been scared of them ever since."
She nodded, biting her lip to stop herself bursting out laughing. He looked so uncomfortable and insecure and she knew it was hard for him to admit he had problems with anything, let alone a toy penguin.
"Want me to take back the chocolate cake things I got the penguin free with…"
"No!" He grinned at her. "Chocolate cake things? They’re not going anywhere."
She laughed, watching as he bounced into the kitchen before moving to the phone, calling Daniel’s to check up on Cassie and see if she wanted a new toy.
