Author’s note: Written for the weekly challenge on Jack and Sam's Pad, a double drabble including a New Year's Resolution and the line "You were meant to read the instructions!"

Jack sighed, reaching out to grab the object. Holding it in his hands he slowly opened it, wishing that he hadn’t made a New Year’s Resolution to get more involved in the things that Carter enjoyed.

He opened an eye as someone poked him in the side, realising that he must have fallen asleep.

"Sir?"

"Carter? You just poked me."

She looked amused as he lifted his head off the desk. "You were almost asleep on your…"She picked up the box lid "’Chemistry for kids kit'".

He just looked sheepish as she glanced behind his desk to where he had dumped all his reports to make space on his desk.

"What happened?"

"It wouldn’t work, was up all night trying to make it work, guess I feel asleep."

"You were meant to read the instructions!"

"There were instructions?"

She nodded, unsuccessfully trying to look annoyed. Handing him the booklet she asked, "Why did you do this?"

"For you. I thought that maybe I should try to get a bit more involved in things you like and this seemed like a good place to start."

She blushed, "Did you ever hear the phrase ‘opposites attract’?"

"Yeah"

"That applies to us."
