Author’s note:Got bored, wrote angst, enough said.

Sam sighed as the knocking on the door to her quarters started; taking one last look in the mirror to ensure her ‘Major Carter’ face was in place before moving to answer.

She instinctively moved to one side as Jack stormed in, a crumpled piece of paper in his hand.

She calmly closed the door, turning to face him.

"Colonel?"

"Cut the crap Sam, what the hell do you think you’re doing?"

She sighed. "Breaking up with you."

"With a note!" He squashed it further in his hand, pausing for a second before throwing it at her feet. "Let me guess, you were hoping that I would just accept ‘it’s over’ and leave it at that?"

She moved away from the door, leaning against the wall opposite, watching as he paced slightly in the middle of the room. "No. I just knew that if I tried to talk to you about it I’d never get to say it, I had to get across what I wanted to say, and that seemed to be the easiest way."

"And what you want is for us to be over?"

"Yes"

"Why?" He asked, almost whispering.

"Because it was a mistake Jack. Thinking that we could get away with it without anything happening."

He froze, turning to face her, his expression one of anger. "Someone’s blackmailing you."

"No!" She ran her hand through her hair. "I just…I thought this is what I wanted. That if we tried it would be perfect, but it isn’t," She shrugged, not sure what else to say.

He stared at her blankly. "This isn’t what you want?"

She shook her head. "No."

He paced the room, "Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why the hell do you want to give up on us, on everything we had?"

"Because it’s not working."

He sighed, turning to look at her. "Tell me you don’t love me."

She met his gaze, her eyes confused. "What?"

"Look me straight in the eye and tell me that you don’t love me, that you feel nothing when we are together, that what we have isn’t perfect. Tell me that and I’ll let you go, set you free from this relationship you apparently don’t want to be in."

She looked down at the floor, blinking back tears. Taking a deep breath she looked him straight in the eye. "I don’t love you."

He staggered back as if she had hit him, a look of pure shock on his face. "I don’t believe you Sam."

"It’s true."

"Why? Why pretend? Why give me such a perfect life and then take it all away? Why now?"

She looked to the floor, sliding down the wall until she could sit against it. She felt his gaze linger on her before he kicked the wall, storming out of the room, the door slamming shut behind him.

"Because I’m dying Jack, I’m dying and there is nothing you can do." She bit back a sob, her calm exterior crumbling. "You can’t save me, and I can’t watch you dying as I do. This way you get a chance at life, at a future. I’m not doing it because I want to be free, I’m doing it because freeing you is the only way you’ll survive."

She feebly wiped away at the tears that cascaded down her cheeks. "And I lied, I love you, always have, always will do, that’s why I have to let you go. And it’s been perfect, the most perfect time of my life." She looked around the empty room before curling up into a ball, silently crying.
