Author’s note:

He leaned against the doorframe, watching her for a few minutes before talking. "Do you love me?"

She paused, turning to face him. "What?"

"It’s a simple question…do you love me?"

"Why are you asking me now?"

"Why are you avoiding the question?"

She looked away, picking a report up to hide her face. "I’m not avoiding the question, I’m just interested in why you want to know now."

He walked over to her, plucking the report from her hands and leaning so that he was staring straight into her eyes. "Because I need to know."

She nodded in understanding and he stepped back, resisting the urge to play with the pen on the desk.

"You don’t want me to die without ever telling you how I really feel."

"It’s not about the mission."

She smiled slightly. "It’s all about the mission. You don’t think I’ll survive so you want to know what I actually feel for you and whether I would actually marry Pete or not."

"And?"

She looked everywhere but at him, finally settling her eyes on him, knowing that she couldn’t avoid it forever. "I could love you, if I was allowed to. But I would have married Pete, as I couldn’t wait forever for some miracle that would let us be together."

He smiled slightly. "Good, because I…"

She placed a finger on his lips, preventing him finishing the sentence. "It’s not allowed."

He nodded sadly and she removed her finger. "I’ll leave you to finish sorting out your equipment."

He strolled out of her lab, humming quietly, impatient to have a conversation with the president over his options.

Jack paced his office as he waited for SG-1 to return. He had called the president as soon as they had left and made arrangements, refusing to accept the possibility that she might not return.

Hearing the alarms go off he ran to the control room, waiting long enough to make sure it was Sg-1 before quickly moving into the Gateroom to wait for them.

Daniel came through first, looking relatively unharmed through the layers of mud.

He was closely followed by Sam and Teal’c, both of whom were still firing through the gate.

"Close the iris." Sam ordered, not relaxing until the gate was completely covered.

"So the mission was a success?"

Teal’c nodded, raising an eyebrow as he looked at him.

"Jack, why aren’t you in uniform?"

He grinned. "I retired, now I’m running the base as a civilian."

Sam’s mouth opened in shock and he winked at her. "Can I say it now?"

She only nodded, looking slightly worried but very relieved.

"I love you too."
