Author’s note: I wrote this bit a while ago, found it again recently. I was going to make it into a longer fic but decided I quite like it how it is.

“Jack!”

“What?” He yells at you.

“Hey, I’m not the one with the problem.”

“And I am?”

You sigh. “Yes.”

He glares angrily at you. “Go to hell.”

You just sit there, opening and closing your mouth silently, not believing what he just said.

He storms out of the camp, leaving you sat on the log, poking a stick into the fire, wondering what had just happened.

You hear movement to you left and grab your handgun, pointing it straight at the noise.

“Relax Daniel, it’s me.” You put the gun down, moving to one side of the log so that Sam can sit down next to you.

“Didn’t go very well then?”

“It went brilliantly.” She raises an eyebrow in a perfect imitation of Teal’c that you would have laughed at had you not been so upset. “Sorry, guess I spend too much time around Jack.”

“Not enough time apparently.” She grins at you mischievously, but her eyes are sincere.

“I’m guessing Teal’c heard everything too.”

“Your secret’s safe with us.”

“I don’t think it matters, nothing will ever happen.” you look over to the fire, watching the flame closely, drawn in by its power.

You feel her place her hand on your shoulder in a comforting gesture. “He’s just scared Daniel. He is an air force Colonel after all, he’s probably never ever considered that he might be gay.”

You turn to face her, considering the new information.

Hearing a crash you both reach for your weapons, relaxing when your hear Jack’s unmistakable, not so muffled swearing.

“I’ll leave you too it.” She squeezes your shoulder lightly, wordlessly giving you courage before silently moving back into her tent.

You sit there silently as Jack reappears, stopping at the edge of the camp before moving over and sitting down next to you.

“Look Daniel…” He starts, waving his arms around trying to think what to say.

You smile, thinking about what Sam said. “I understand.”

“You do?”

“Yes, and I probably shouldn’t have dropped it on you.”

He laughs. “It was a bit of a shock”

You roll your eyes, glad that your admission hadn’t changed your relationship, at least not in a bad way. “And I’m not expecting anything from you, I just thought that it was time you know how I feel.”

You sit there in compassionable silence for a little while, enjoying each others company.

“This scares me,” he blurts out, looking straight at the fire.

“This?”

“Us, feelings, all of it. After Charlie died I swore to myself that I’d never let anyone get too close, as I couldn’t deal with anyone else I care about dying.” He turns to you, a small smile on his face. “And lets face it Daniel, you get yourself killed or nearly killed all the time.”

You cannot help but laugh, “I’m still here,” you pause, “and I’m not planning on going anywhere.”

You turn to face him and he slowly moves his head until he is looking straight into your eyes. “Good.”

You realise that you do not need him to say anything else, you can see everything you need in his eyes and know that he can see the same reflected in yours.
