Sam sighed as she walked into the smoke filled bar; easily spotting him collapsed over the bar in the corner.

Walking up to him, she glared at the back of his head as the barman walked over.

"Colonel Sam Carter?"

She nodded, and the barman raised his eyebrow while giving her the once over.

She ignored him, instead turning her attention to the drunk General that had requested her be called.

"General?" He barely stirred so she poked him, moving to yell into his ear. "Jack!"

He jumped, falling off the stool, ending up spread out on the floor. "Cater! What the hell was that for?"

She grabbed his hand, pulling him to his feet and resting his body against her so that he didn’t fall over again. "You were asleep, the barman called me, said you’d claimed that I was the love of your life and the only one that could come and get you."

He leaned closer to her, and she turned her face away from him, the smell of alcohol on his breath making her feel sick. "That’s because it’s true."

She pushed him out of the door, blinking a few times to adjust to the darkness of the alley. "What’s true?"

He pulled at her hand until she raised it, his fingers hovering over her engagement ring. "You’re the love of my life."

She just stared at him, mouth open in shock and he grinned.

Shaking her head she started moving again, pulling him along with her. "You’re just jealous I found myself someone before you did, and now you can’t spend missions staring at my six constantly."

"Oh come on Carter, stop being such an idiot and admit it, you love me too."

"There’s nothing to admit."

"I don’t believe that."

"You’re drunk."

"And you’re lying."

She froze, causing him to almost fall flat on his face when he didn’t. " I know you hate me Carter but trying to kill me is a low blow, even for you."

"And what you said wasn’t?"

He glared at her, pulling himself from her support and stumbling to lean against the alley wall. "What I said was the truth Carter. If you can’t accept it then that’s *your* problem."

"My problem! What about your problem Sir? I’m getting married and the best thing you can think of is to get drunk, and then get the bar owner to call me to drag you home. And if that’s not bad enough you then decide to proclaim to the world how much you love me. And then have the audacity to tell me that I’m stupid for not admitting the same."

He pointed a finger at her. "I said you were an idiot, not stupid. Although marrying that duck is one of the most stupid things you could ever do."

"Duck! How dare you, it’s bad enough that you’ve decided to insult me but don’t you dare bring Pete into this."

"He’s the reason for all this."

She laughed, looking at him in disappointment. "You’re pathetic, he has done nothing to you yet you are now blaming him for the fact you’re a miserable old drunk."

"What! You’d rather I blame you? Sure I can do that. I love you Sam, and I thought you knew that, and then you go off and meet someone, and yes it hurt but I still hoped that it was just a phase, but you’re marrying him. And yes it makes me miserable to see the woman I love getting married to someone she obviously doesn’t love."

"And what makes you think I don’t love him?"

"You wouldn’t be here if you did."

"You’re my General, I have a responsibility to you."

"You could have called Daniel, he’d have come to pick me up. But instead you left lover boy at home to come and get me yourself, and you’ve put up with me so far which tells me that you care about me a lot more than you are willing to admit. Either that or you are looking for any excuse to stay away from him, maybe both."

Her anger disappeared, realising that there was no way she could argue against that. "We can’t be together. And I can’t stand being alone anymore; I had to find someone. It wasn’t meant to go this far."

"So stop it. Go home and tell him it’s over, we’ll work it out, somehow."

She shook her head. "It’s not that easy, it never will be."

"Please don’t give up on us Sam, just promise me that you will at least think about it."

"Ok I will. But if memory serves you’re not even going to remember this in the morning."

He grinned. "Nope, but you will, and that’s what matters."

She nodded, smiling slightly as he draped his arm over her shoulder and allowed her to lead him home.
