She smiled at him as she entered his office, but he could see the conflict in her eyes.

"Hey Carter, how can I help?"

"You said you wanted the results of my tests on the device SG-8 brought back as soon as I completed them."

He nodded, signalling for her to sit down.

SG-8 had returned from a mission two days ago with an alien device that appeared harmless. However the whole team had come down with some sort of alien virus just after they’d found the device and switched it on. They had brought it back for studying.

Jack had sent out another team in bio-suits to see if it was something on the planet that had caused SG-8’s illnesses, while Sam studied the device, under strict orders not to turn it on.

They had found nothing on the planet that could be harmful to human health, and with one member of SG-8 already dead Jack knew that Sam was his last hope. "Please tell me you’ve worked something out."

"Yes," she looked down at her hands so as not to have to look at him. "The device emits a small amount of the virus into the surrounding area, it dissipates almost immediately, but anyone in that area will breathe it in and become infected."

"Is there a cure?"

"I’ve talked to some of the scientists and they’ve managed to mutate some of our own drugs to combat the virus. SG-8 are being treated now, they should be fine in a few days."

He nodded. "Good work Colonel."

"Thank you sir." She looked up, smiling slightly at him.

He signalled that she was dismissed, so she got up and was opening the door when he stopped her. "How do you know the cure will work? Aren’t things like that meant to be tested beforehand?"

She sighed; knowing that he had worked out something was up. "I switched on the device, it was the only way to test my hypothesis. They tested the cure on me and it worked."

"You were infected? I should have been informed."

She turned to look at him. "And you would have stopped me working and then I’d be dead along with the rest of SG-8."

Jack stared at her, glad that she had found a cure and was going to be ok but horrified at what she had done. "You disobeyed a direct order."

"I saved lives."

He ran his hand through his hair, knowing that he should punish her for disobeying his order, but he had done worse for the same reason and no one had punished him.

"If you would excuse me General I have a dinner date with Pete to get ready for."

He nodded, watching as she left; suddenly realising that Pete would never really know her. He’d never find out what she had done, what she was willing to do, and that thought brought him some comfort. She had been honest with him, so while he may not have won her heart yet, he at least had her trust, which in his books gave him a much better chance.

Humming slightly he opened a report, suddenly feeling more positive about the future, as Sam Carter wasn’t going to marry a man she didn’t trust.
