Thursday,30 December 1943 Dearest Kitty, Since the last raging quarrels, things have settled down here, not only between ourselves, Dusssel and "upstairs", but also between Mr. and Mrs. van D. Nevertheless, a few dark thunderclouds are heading this way, and all because of...food. Mrs. van D. came up with the ridiculous idea of frying fewer potatoes in the morning and saving them for later in the day. Mother and Dussel and the rest of us didn't agree with her, so now we're dividing up the potatoes as well. It seems the fats and oils aren't being doled out fairly, and Mother's going to have to put a stop to it. I'll let you know if there are any interesting developments. For the last few months now we've been splitting up the meat(theirs with fat, ours without), the soup(they eat it, we don't), the potatoes(theirs peeled, ours not), the extras and now the fried potatoes too. If only we could split up completely! Yours, Anne PS. Bep had a picture postcard of the entire Royal Family copied for me. Juliana looks very young, and so does the Queen. The three little girls are adorable. It was incredibly nice of Bep, don't you think?
From: p156-157 Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl who went into hiding like many other Jews to avoid being taken to the Ghettos and camps. Here, she shares a little argument about the distribution of food with another family, sharing their quarters. At a time when food was scarce and black market ration books were all you had, such things became very important. Also, it shows the Jewish gratitude for the Allies and their hope that liberation would come soon. Unfortunately Anne Frank in 1945 was taken to Auschwitz and then to Bergen-Belsen where she died of typhus.

Picture of crematorium. " The skeletons and ashes that remained in the crematorium were simply disgusting to witness. The size and number of the ovens showed it to be a massive operation where thousands upon thousands must have been cremated each day"Uncle David. After being told they were going to take a shower, prisoners were locked in the shower rooms and a gas named Zyklon B was released through shower heads. However, for the stronger people the gas only rendered them unconscious. The bodies were then cremated, and unfortunately for the unconscious, they were burned alive.
April 14th, 1945 Dear Journal, I am already positive that I have seen the destruction of humanity here. Today however I witnessed a very disturbing scene. I had been told to guard the milk store for the night and so I had stationed myself outside the door. After a while, a woman came up to me with a baby in her hands and begged me to give her some milk for the child. I took the child in my arms, and only then did I realize that the child was dead, probably had been for days. The mother however, did not seem to know. Seeing her desperation I poured some drops of milk over the dead child's mouth. Thanking and blessing me the woman turned and left with the baby. She had only gone a few metres, when she fell down and died. To think that a mother cannot even tell the difference between whether her child is dead or alive seems almost unthinkable. But this is Auschwitz. This is where just about every thing ever thought unthinkable was done and celebrated. We can only hope that it will never happen again.

Auschwitz became the last stop for railway cars. Jews from every corner of Europe were brought here, where over 2 million of them met their gruesome death.Once the truth about Auschwitz was revealed , people could not believe that so much planning and determination could have been put into such an evil task.

" I never have, and I never shall witness so many dead . Auschwitz has managed to blur the line between dead and alive."Uncle David. There were so many half cremated and dead bodies at the camps, that even farmers were asked to bring in their carts to carry the bodies away. Since the Nazis allowed people to live around dead bodies, epidemics began, which only resulted in more corpses. The bodies were llittle more than skeletons.

" Among the survivors at Auschwitz were a number of children, particulatly twins, some with serious abnormalities. At first, I did not understand why such weak and handicapped children had even been allowed to live in Auschwitz, without being gassed immediately. Only later was I to learn about the horror of Mengele."Uncle David.

Dr. Josef Mengele developed the Laboratory of Pathology at Auschwitz, with the excuse that it was for the development of scientific knowledge. In fact, this was the place where he and his colleagues performed the most brutal, vile and gruesome "medical experiments" ever. Auschwitz was the perfect place for these experiments due to the availability of bodies for dissection and other "scientific" purposes. Many of the victims actually say that it was better to be chosen by Mengele, because it at least meant that you would live a while longer. Although these experiments were performed on different persons, Mengele had a unique interest in twins. Some examples of experiments include: 1. Exposing people to extreme cold or heat to study the body's reaction. 2. Tests to see the effects of poisoned bullets. 3. Injecting individuals with typhus, malaria and other viruses, or injecting gasoline into their veins to study the body's resistance. 4. Testing the effects of gas poisoning and phosphorus burns. These are just a few examples of the barbaric experiments conducted on innocent victims by these doctors.
