Unit History
The 8th Guards Mechanized Corps was formed in the 1st Tank Army and remained part of that army until the end of the war. Since 1st Tank Army was involved in the hardest fighting around Kharkov in August and then advanced to the Dnieper in late 1943, 8th Guards Mech was at the front in almost continual combat until spring 1944. Despite this, the only organizational change in the Corps, besides the gradual removal of light tanks from the tank units, was the shuffling of SU regiments typical of most of the Soviet tank and mechanized corps in late 1943 and 1944.
