| Arts collective breathes life into abandoned newspaper factory through dance, drawing, film and music. On August 9, 10 and 11, 2001, at 8 p.m., 18 Spadina Avenue (just north of Front), The Second Floor Collective will present its world premier of Inhabiting the In-between, an off-site production of the 2001 Fringe Festival of Independent Dance Artists (fFIDA). Set in an old newspaper factory, this interdisciplinary site-specific performance/exhibition brings the stories of an abandoned urban landscape to life through dance, film, music and visual arts. Inhabiting the In-between explores the relationships between bodies and place, and the ways that space is storied through history, memories and movement. Inhabiting the In-between draws the stories of a living city back into the spaces of a building that has witnessed much of Torontos history. In this interdisciplinary arts piece by dancer-choreographers Ana-Francisca de la Mora, Inge Foulds, Alorani Martin and Natasha Myers, filmmakers Geoffrey Siskind and Suzanne Bradley, visual artists Antonio Gmez-Palacio and Jocelyn del Ro, and musicians Robert Ock, Samuel Dunn and Joshua Engel, dance, drawing, film and music are interwoven. The drawings shape the movements as much as the dancers move the artists pens. Sculpting space through light and music, the audience is treated to the play of moving images over moving bodies. With a long history of collaboration among its members, including performances in Trinity-Bellwoods Park for Dusk Dances in 2000 and fFIDA in 1999, The Second Floor Collective is producing with the generous support of the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council and All Aboard Youth Ventures Inc, who have kindly lent us the space. With expertise in science, architecture, education, journalism, anthropology, new media, cultural studies and the environment, The Second Floor Collective is a unique gathering of individuals, creating an unparalleled alliance between disciplines. Their innovative projects form an urban ecology to explore living, livable worlds in city spaces. |
