The Beehive

Hair length

Front: Starting with 3 inches all around hairline at the face getting longer toward the crown to approximately 6 inches. BACK: 3-1/2 inches at nape to 6 inches at crown.

Set

Top: For the bang, make a 2-inch side part. Part off a section from part to receding and wind two large rollers down on an angle. These rollers are floated. Directly behind the bang start circle of beehive by centering three large rollers. The little piece of hair at the receding line between bang and centered rollers is wound on a short roller.

Heavy Side: The hair is combed down from temple to ear and wound down on two rollers-one floating on middle ear and the other floating from temple to eye line.

Parted Side: Wind one roller down from part and float at the receding line. Comb hair down from temple toward ear to float two rollers.

Back: The beehive gets its height in the crown. Using four jumbo rollers wind the crown in the opposite direction of the top. All hair beneath crown is combed in the same direction as the crown. Start to wind angle partings toward parted side. When you have finished, the row in the nape section may be wound on thinner rollers.

The Flip

Hair length

The bang 6 inches; the sides 4 inches; top 8 inches; crown 8 inches blending to 3 inches in the nape.

Set

Part out a small amount of hair at the hairline over the left eye and direct it to the center forehead. Later this will be formed into a curl. Set full-base rollers #1 and #2. Part out a very small amount of hair in the left forehead (see dotted line) and include it with half base roller #3. This action will insure a soft sweeping bang effect without separations. Set triangular full base rollers #4 and #5 which will produce a 10 o’clock shaping effect in the comb-out. Rollers #6 and #7 are set in the same direction. Set one counter clockwise, off base curl and two half base clockwise curls in front of the right ear. Rollers #8, #9 and #10 are full base for a neutral movement. Radial motion, full base rollers #11 and #12 and a half base roller #13 will produce a 2 o’clock shaping effect in the comb-out. Finish with one clockwise off base curl. Rollers #14, #15 and #16 are full base rollers for volume. Form a shaping in back of rollers #12 and #13. Place three counter clockwise curls in the shaping. Roller #17 is a full base roller placement. Set half-base rollers #18, #19 and #20 for less volume. Rollers #21 through #25 are indentation rollers and will establish the flip effect Set two off base fill-in curls behind the ear toward the back of the head and three full base fill-in curls at the nape.

Comb out

Brush and relax all of the hair into the movement of the set. Begin cushioning in the crown for volume. Blend the bang section into the crown area with the same foundation technique. Interlock the crown and bang section with the side. Surface brush the bang section toward the right to blend with the volume movement on the right side. Lightly brush the volume of the crown and the sides into the indentation flip movement of the nape and sides. Reinforce the flip by holding the hair down while backcombing in an upward direction. Hold the indentation movement close to the scalp while lifting the volume areas with a tail comb. A bouncy flip with flair through the bang section and a saucy up turned effect on each side demonstrate the simple casual look for medium length hair.

Haircut

The bang, top section and sides are 31/2 to 4 inches. The crown is 5˝ to 5 inches tapering down to a zero nape line.

Set

Rollers #1, #2 and #3 are set from a "point of distribution" over the left eye to produce a circular effect. Rollers #6, #7, and #8 are moving to the right and toward the crown.  Starting high on each side, rollers #9, #10, #11, #14, #15 and #16 are set in a slight circular movement down and forward.  Indentation rollers #4 and #5 on the forehead and side rollers #12, #13, #17 and #18 will create the current soft curl effect around the face.  Crown rollers #19 through #23 are volume base to create fullness in this area.  The vertical placement of rollers #24, #25, and #26 will blend the fullness of the crown with the closeness of the half base curls in the nape area.

Comb out

Brush and relax the hair in accordance with the direction of the set.   First, establish the foundation with back-brushing in the crown.  Use the same technique in the bang section.  Hold the side hair down and forward during the back-brushing process.  Lightly surface brush to establish design.  Backcomb individual sections for the open curl effect around the face.  Notice the volume cascade effect throughout the crown.  Mold the nape hair in accordance with the natural growth direction.  Tumbling curls and swirling tendrils fall forward onto the face to create a provocative party-time hair fashion.
